Sorry but I'm really skeptical. Your engine is screwed up I can believe that, but the sand part is pretty far out there.

This helps me lean a bit towards the idea of waiting for the next year's models

Any possibility of someone vandalizing your car with sand?

I couldn't help but thing the OP will have seen more than his share of sand during his deployment. Be safe!

Hmm I also have sound all around my engine bay but I feel like that could be from driving on dirt roads.

So after starting an arbitration process and contacting a lawyer Scion decided to just settle outside of everything and reimburse me completely. Thank god cause that would have been one hell of a process to deal with being in Afghanistan lol. Now I hope that I don't have that problem with the 2014 model :P

The problem occurred around 7k mi and the idle dropped to around 400-500 rpms and pretty much lost all compression in the right side of the motor. The engine would shutter like it wanted to stall and because i had installed an aftermarket intake Scion wanted to blame the problem on that. So.. If any of you guys are having this same problem i suggest you make the engine stock as possible before bringing it into the dealership. im in jacksonville, nc right now and there are currently 3 people having the same problem as me. Be on the lookout if you are noticing anything like this.
My engine idles around 600 RPM, but doesnt feel like it wants to stall. Is that ok?

I gotta disagree dude. When the tc I originally bought got writen off by hail on route from the port they went able to get another manual tranny in all of Canada for a few months so they bent over backwards to make the deal work for me to drive off in the floor model FR-S. I think it's a dealership thing. And I am in Canada so there is that.
