The price of the intercooler isn't really the problem to me, it's just I personally don't want to add an electric water pump and hoses. There is nothing wrong with that just personal preference. I would rather add something like the robi spec cooling system or Perrin oil cooler and aftermarket radiator. Keeping underhood temps down would still help I think. Any input from Innovate on this?

Sure, keeping fluids cool is good but reducing temperature of the air isn't only good for reliability but it also increases power/efficiency, so it's kind of a double bonus.
I think I want what's not currently illustrated on the price chart which is the stage 1 kit but with the laminova aftercooler system. So I'm looking forward to that package when it becomes available (which page 1 says it will at some point).

The IC version should allow for a fair bit more boost, thus unlocking more of the kits potential. I had a whipple twin screw on my mk1 MR2 SC (custom install), and I was running around 15 psi. I data logged the intake temps, and they were usually around 100-110 deg F while flogging it around on a 75-80 degree day. I never logged the temps upstream of the IC, but just feeling the pipe, it was literally so hot you couldn't touch it for longer that a split second!!! The pipe after the IC, was as those mentioned (much cooler). My IC was also air-to-water, which makes sense for the MR2. Please not that the twin screw SC was mounted to the side of the block, with inlet and outlet pipes. Which allowed the use of a standard (non-integrated) IC setup. Once the pump was primed, I never had any trouble with the pump/lines/IC setup. I also used the same pump/heat exchanger from the mk1 MR2 on my Rotrex SC MR2 Spyder with a different IC core. Always had good intake temps even with 17psi max boost. |

Also, correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the a chargecooler/intercooler provide denser air? It's not just about running cooler engine temps, it's a more efficient/more powerful combination.
It probably comes down to your goals. For me an extra $1200 is worth it, but for some people I'm sure it isn't.

It looks to me that it will just be an external electric water pump. At least the design is simple and if the pump failed, it would be easy to spot.

Hopefully Innovate will show us some of the IAT temps they have logged and we can monitor our own with Ecutek. Just thought of wrapping the intake tube with a heat reflective shield and you could check the IAT's before and after to see if it did anything. |
