There's nothing wrong with making a habit of it. My comment was intended for the people that think it is necessary to park a car, leave it in gear and also set the emergency brake.

First off, loving the thread and the stories. Especially @Robmilkshakes.

Never had this experience personally, but I've always been paranoid about it.

First Answer: The reason that you don't just leave it in gear (no p-brake) is because it puts stress on the transmission if that is the only thing keeping you from rolling downhill. The more you stress a system, the sooner it will break down. Hence why alot of members here are going with the combination "p-brake/in gear" route. (Has to do with something called "static forces")

Second Answer: It doesn't really matter too much what gear you leave the brake in, but as stated before, the lower the ratio of the gear, the better, hence why some members elect to leave the car in reverse, regardless of incline or decline.

I'm kind of disappointed the pubic hair innuendo wasn't continued...

I was always taught to leave it in the gear opposite of the likely rolling direction, i.e. 1st gear if facing uphill and reverse if facing downhill, always with the added handbrake and wheels turned towards the kerb.

Not true. A lot of cars have this but there are also a lot that use the rear disk/pads as the parking brake. My Neon SRT did this as does my sisters G6. Just two examples off the top of my head.
