That's why I pull handbrake shift to 1st and engage wheel lock like a habit everytime. Better safe than sorry. You're a lucky man OP.

my hubbs hates that I park both of our cars in gear...my mustang ebrake failed once....ONCE! always in gear after that.

It is funny to watch him start his car after I have driven it, stalls every time and gets mad at me! lol better than his car rolling away.

sorry it happened to you but at least it wasn't catastrophic

If your brakes are hot when you park and you put the ebrake on, the rotor/pads shrink as they cool, thereby you now have less clamp force and it can roll away.

Thus always park in gear, with ebrake on pretty firmly not just a click or two. There's really no reason NOT to park in gear, unless you have a command starter/turbo timer.

Just to let you know. All ebrakes operate with a drum brake. So if your car has 4 wheel disc....there is a small drum behind the rear rotors.

My rule is....just enough clicks to stop the car with the ebrake. Then shake the car from my seat. Then put it in gear. That way I know the ebrake is the main part holding the car and the gear is just in case of failure.

The car didn't roll when I got out, it rolled an hour or so later, and it wasn't 500 degrees outside that day. My assumption is that the brakes cooled and then lost grip. Or it could have been malevolent spirits who had me next on their list. I'll go with the brakes.

I bought a Toyota Matrix as a work car last february... Let my mom drive it and she parked it in my grandfathers drive way. Has a decent angle on it too... she jumped out and while admiring it, it started to roll... luckily she hadn't locked the door and I opened the door really quick and hit the brake. Ebrake failed. Toyota can adjust it for $85... screw that, I'll use a brick! lol

Don't pay the dealer that money when you can do this yourself at home. My dad helped tighten the ebrake cable on my fiance's '05 tC with just a wrench, a jack, and jack stands...it literally took 5 minutes, definitely not worth $85 of labor.

I found an article that gives you similar steps that my dad took, however he's been working with engines and mechanical parts for so long that it didn't even seem like he went through these many steps!

Hell no I aint paying them shit... they told me it needed some special took to adjust and thats why its $85... I'm pretty sure if I took the time and crawled under it I could find out how to do it just by looking. But thanks for the link, I'm about to read it now!

OP glad the car was ok, hope your Honda didn't take the brunt end of the force either

On a side note, I know what you kinda experienced. My parent's drive way is a steep 30-35 degree hill. I remember one day when I was still grade school my dad picked me up my basketball practice and "parked" his '89 Ford Ranger M/T on the driveway. It was literally about 1 minute after we got into the house and started to make preparations to make dinner that we hear what sounded like a horrible auto accident or something crashing into a tree. We looked out the front window of our house to find my dad's truck not in our driveway but in the neighbors front yard; luckily the neighbor's front yard had a slight incline to it so it didn't go through the house.

My dad has been driving a M/T all his life and swore up and down that he did in fact put his ebrake on before leaving his truck. Come to find out the cable was in fact loose due to time and could not hold his truck on our driveway any longer. Luckily there were no cars around and the only damage he had was a bunch of grass in his tailpipe. All he could do was laugh and said "don't tell your mom or you'll starve tonight!" (in the most joking way possible)

So was I the only one that ran outside to check on the car after reading this thread?
