What's odd is that Nissan would choose to build a competitor to the CR-Z when nobody is buying that car. The monthly sales numbers for that car were awful in 2012.

The FR-S/BRZ have proven there's some demand in the market for lightweight, RWD sports cars. C'mon Nissan, step up and challenge the Twins.

Was it the word "hybrid" that scared you? What if it were the Nissan 1.6T GDI with an electric boost system, a la Porsche 918? Would that take the scare out of the word "hybrid"?

Sure, if they make a Nissan CR-Z, it'll likely be awful. That car was meh on paper and even worse in practice.

Hybrid Silvia with a proper turbo 4, IMA, 7MT, rear drive, and mechanical LSD would be a legit offering. They can't straight up offer an S15 redux as the world has moved on since then.

Why not? Toyobaru have served up an S13 redux, and it's doing pretty well!

They can get away with it because it doesn't have Nissan on the hood. Also, nobody in recent times has done a boxer FR config, so that's something fresh to the table that Nissan can't do. Nissan has the opportunity to leapfrog the 86 with both torque and efficiency by going with a Hybrid sports powertrain.

??? Of course NIssan can (and should!) serve up a modern SX/Silvia.

Boxer engine FR is novel, but nothing magical. For the vast majority of FT86 buyers the boxer engine wasn't a factor.

That would be fine, but you can be sure the extra cost of the hybridization will be offset with cost-cutting measures including icky fwd-ness :P

actually no, im completely fine with a sports car thats houses an electric drive, i firmly believe that electric motors are superior than gas engines, but of course I believe that petrol is still superior than batteries.

Based on their goals, its hard for me to think this is going to be a sports car. Nissan's idea of current sports cars are 370z and GT-R, and one must look the part. and if they say that the car is a hybrid aimed at youth but not a competitor to other small sports cars, like the frs...then what is it?

If it is a Silvia, id be a bit relieved because i know Nissan wouldn't screw up the legacy and come out with something proper. but id be hard press not to be a competitor to the FRS-BRZ-MIATA-RX8.

Id face palm if its a modern version of the NX2000

UNLESSS!!! ...its a hot-hatch Modern Pulsar GTI-R Hybrid AWD turbo....then efff evuurrraythang else

Personally, i think Nissans have gotten very ugly recently. Primarily the new grille they have. I doubt this new car will be much different.

Yea that didn't come out right, my bad. What I meant is, since Toyota & Subaru hadn't done any sort of affordable FR sports since the AE86, they used that as the catalyst for the twins and ended up picking up the refugees from the Silvia camp that Nissan abandoned. If Nissan came out with a virtual facsimile of the S15, they would likely be blasted for a half-hearted and low-tech attempt. By the time this alleged Nissan car drops, it'll be what, 13 years [?] after the S15 died off. You can't just drop in some direct injection and hit "reheat" and expect to get a positive response, the automotive landscape is much different now.

I *hope* Nissan can raise the bar and make a legit current-times Silvia successor. Adding electric assist would allow them to market the car alongside the Porsche 918 and Ferrari Enzo successor and play an honest high-tech card in marketing. Maybe I'm off-base and high-tech doesn't matter for the modern Silvia demographic.

I think we're all on the same page; FWD sports is best left to the hot hatches where perceived practicality is a big purchasing decision.

Yet that's PRECISELY what Toyobaru did. And it's BRILLIANT!

You speak as if throwing on a hybrid assist system has no negative ramifications. It will be *more expensive*. Which would be death in an FR head-to-head vs. the FT86 cars.

I'm telling you, if it's to be hybrid, it's going to be fwd to offset the cost. Screw that noise...

I'm not willing to accept that speculation until they've dug their own grave.

Nissan has already said they're not intent on competing with the twins. That means:
*not $25k, OR
*not FR drivetrain, OR
*something more high-tech

If they do a cheap $19k rear-drive with the parts-bin 1.6T GDI, then cool. If they go more expensive than the twins, they'll have to spruce up that powertrain to rationalize the cost. If they go front-drive, then they'll be competing with the MINI Roadster and forthcoming BMW Z2, which are sport-ish, not true sports cars, IMO.

First and foremost Nissan cars are mostly ugly and look not from this world or anywhere comforting and familiar. My .02

Expect the car to be designed by the same hands that gave birth to the design of the Juke, so we can all anticipate a more youth-oriented approach.

Damn, they've already fugged up!
