Per volume of fuel ethanol has a lower energy density than gasoline, however, an engine is just an air pump and e85's stoichiometric ratio is only around 9.7:1 versus gasolines 14.7:1. Ends up netting more power per volume of air. Sorry if i stepped on anyone's feet and for resurrecting an old thread. Just my $.02.

Sorry if my explanation was too brief but yes, more power for the same amount of air. That 30% oxygen content does some awesome stuff.
