Don't be an ass and show it. Furthermore, this has been a cool thread thus far, let's NOT go down that rabbit hole again. |

im wondering about this tubing, too.
EGR was my first thought, too. But the EGR systems iīve seen yet were all short, near the head, small diameter and metal (because of the heat). Second thought was vacuum for the brake booster (is it called this in english?). But seems a bit oversized and wrong positioned... Also there wouldnīt be any vacuum with the throttle closed. It hardly makes sense to keep the throttle open while braking (in normal situations). Third thought was gas tank ventilation. But also far too big for this purpose. What might be a reasonable purpose for intake air other than combustion? |

That is not the EGR system. Itīs the air pump, most likely.
The air that is pumped by the air pump goes into the EXHAUST manifold to help complete the combustion of unburned gases during the warm up phase. This improves catalytic converter efficiency at a time when exhaust gases are quite rich. After the engine has done its initial warm up, the secondary air injection system stops working. Since it's part of the emissions system of the engine, it is monitored by the ECU. Thanks for that pic fax0815 and Tyandriel. I hope the chassis braces are production-based and not just part of the cage used for the VLN race. It could mean they actually took chassis rigidity seriously. |

so what is it? i have a theory... look at this: http://blogs.insideline.com/roadtest...-required.html ![]() ![]() ![]() (Sorry for the giant pics) look familiar? its from the 5.0 Mustang. it "pumps" certain frequencies into the cabin to get that great engine sound. what car also uses this? LF-A... who tuned the sound of the LF-A? yamaha. what other car did yamaha "tune"? FT... anybody have a better explanation? ![]() for reference this is the FB20:

Thats some good info. The FB20 is setup a bit different from the FT86 engine. Most obvious is alternator is front and center on the FB, off to the side on the FT. Intake goes into the front of the FT, rear of the FB.
Oil filter is in the same easy to access location. And the battery is in front of the engine in the Subaru but behind the engine in the FT (nice!). |

That is also a good theory madfast. Iīve seen that in Golf GTI MkVīs too. It just seemed too bulky for a "sound improver", but it could be.
In the Mustang with Coyote engine, a friend of mine removed the filter/membrane that is held in that housing shown in the second pic, and now it has a really loud intake noise in the cabin, seems to be a pretty common modification. |

more info about yamaha's involvement with sound in the LF-A. if you ask me, yamaha was brought in to do this more so than mechanical design of the head. everybody knows how to design a high flowing head. but sound? resonance waves and all that good stuff? leave it for the experts, in this case, yamaha.

a sound actor!? goddamit... the car weīre developing here has one, too. But Iīve never seen it, yet -.-
I donīt like the whole concept. An engine sounds like an engine sounds. My opinion to this is: unnecessary crap. Budget and capacities blown for an utterly pointless device. |
