Seriously though, I can't figure out how you lost 350 lbs by simply gutting the car. Care to explain?

I saw somewhere that sound deadening can weigh 100 pounds alone in a regular car, we're not talking Lexus. The full A/C system probably weighs close to 50 pounds considering all the lines are copper or steel and the compressor has a heavy steel casing.

Everyone has to remember that many of the cars part's are being specifically designed with the goal of being light weight. Compared to typical cars I would expect common parts to initially weight less in a car on a diet.

This isn't a regular car, it's a lightweight sports car. It comes from factory with lightweight components. Weight reduction will not be as easy as it is on highway cruisers. @ fernan, it's likely to be over 200 lbs. I'm being conservative.

Sorry dude, Seats, carpet, rear bench, platic panels, a/C and speakers = 200-300lbs, not 50-75lbs. Factory Sound dead weighs 45lbs by itself (stacked all together on a scale). Factory seats = 30-45lbs A PIECE! Race seats are between 15-25lbs. My Corbeau F1's were 19lbs a piece and my factories were 30+lbs. That's just the Front seats. The rear back rest (heaviest part) is a good 15-20lbs. NOW....add in the weight from the very Brackets that hold the seats in place now. Removing metal brackets + the screws that hold those brackets down is going to put in some additional weight into removing factory seats alone. There is a good 100+lbs in removing seats alone and replacing them with aftermarket ones. Carpet although feels rather light when it's spread out, imagine if you could collectively weigh it...it's not light because it has padding in certain spots. Just so you know, my 2550lbs is not a guess. It's confirmed weight, I wouldn't post it if I didn't know. |

A gutted 350z I bet can still shed 300+lbs. Sorry I'm not going to even remotely believe that a gutted FT-86 + cage and air jack system is even remotely near Production weight (which is kinda what you are trying to get at). It just don't happen like that. I'm sticking with 2800lbs, if it's lighter than that we still win right...if it's heavier than that, it just lets me know there are a lot of metal brackets to gut from the car to get down to 24xxlbs with a cage and air jack system. Just fyi....I still can shed another 60+lbs off of my tC by replacing the glass roof (confirmed 40lbs of weight) with a carbon roof and replacing the hatch with a carbon hatch. |

I like them better than stock that's for sure. I didn't realize that though until I sold them and was running stockers at the track recently...lol. I sold them to put money into the new turbo setup. When I had them, I had the FX1 seats. Great for straight line, but kinda swayed in the shoulders a little to much for the race track. I will be running Sparco Fighters for my next set and Takata Harness. |

I just want to know how you lost 350 lbs from the interior. And I have no doubt that cage weights as much or more than what they took out. @Jay, you take out the glass roof, and weight it. Simple :P Offtopic: dragon, have you heard anything good about the recaro speed? I was looking into getting a pair...

I built a track car and I managed to shave 450 lbs from the car before roll cage. Stock Rx8 weights 2950 lbs and I scaled it on the track after I built it and it weighed 2500 lbs before roll cage. Then you add the roll cage which weights from 100 to 150 lbs. I am very sure ft86 would be 2750 to 2800 lbs if it uses light weight materials.
I had a 2006 mazda RX8 GS and these are what I took out from the car: stereo speakers air condition most of the interior parts back seat seat belt front side window side mirrors rear bumper protecter all the stuff in the trunk and put light weight parts very light exhaust racing seat plastic front windows lighter hood racing wheels and coilovers lighter battery and some more I love the car in terms of handling. It is a real sport car because of the longer wheel base the car was more stable than s2000 on a bigger track and faster corner but the big weakness of the car was the torque of the engine which made life hard on the track . Lots of people don't want to modify the engine, sometimes it is the money and other times is the engine can't be reliable with more power. I am not looking for big power. I am just hoping ft86 will have a decent power so you can be competitive on the track without spending too much money. |
