I'll admit it wasn't like I just put a wrench on there and broke it free immediately, like popping a lid off a stubborn jar. Some of us have a little more than 150lbs of tq as well I've attempted to loosen bolts and done pull ups on the wrench, split sockets, twisted the ends off of extensions (etc), so the stubborn-ness scale it's hardly maxed out.

I installed a pulley this past week and notice what sounds like gear whine. Searching hasn't yielded much result, but my best guess is that the lighter pulley transmits more NVH. This sound is directly related to engine speed and not the car speed. In or out of gear, it is noticeable at around 2500 RPM and higher. Seriously sounds almost like a supercharger, but once the revs get high enough, the exhaust (Nameless axleback) drowns it out.

Nothing else seems to be affected, the pulley doesn't wobble and I've seen no leaks. All Subarus make funny noises anyway, so I'm not freaking out. Just looking for a little validation in my life.

Aside from all that, I really like the more natural feel of rev matching. I no longer have to double-blip!
well it was the strangest coincidence but if you search the forums for a noise while shifting youll find im not alone in this problem. guess it just happened to start the same day i did the install. apparently the noise im hearing has something to do with the clutch or trans. and only happens in colder weather. weirdest thing.

Isn't replacing the stock harmonic damper (pulley) bad? Subarus do not come with a harmonic damper or balancer like some other vehicles do. For other manufacturers' vehicles, this is a legitimate concern. Proof:

"Thank you for your patience as I checked with our Technical Services Department regarding your message below. They advised that the crank pulley is a pulley and nothing else. It is not used as a harmonic damper/balancer.

Thanks for the opportunity to be of assistance. If you need any future assistance, please feel free to contact us again."

Best wishes,

If you remove the cover you should see the teeth on the flex-plate (flywheel for manuals) that the starter uses to start the car. You'll need two people, but often times you can finagle a flathead screwdriver or pry bar in between the teeth and hold the flex-plate by prying against the bell housing. Only reason I don't really recommend it is because if you slip and damage a tooth it can damage your starter and replacing both is $$$. Best bet is to use an impact or buy the proper tool to hold the flexplate tho.
whats that tool called... flexplate grabber lol? so that when i call the shops around i can ask if they have one before i take it?
got the pulley and am very anxious to get this thing on

If I knew I'd tell you... lol. I've always used an impact on other auto cars and had no problems.

I installed mine today and after I struggled with a 16" braker I used a 1 metre steel bar attached half way to the 16" breaker. And bang! Done!

It is ok, dont expect huge gains 100hp or anything like that. It does make a slight difference, but than again it could be subjective. I have taken it out so I can have my first 1000km service done. I will put it back in once that is done.

Just ordered mine, kind of nervous about the whole install. Ive avoided these types of upgrades because of the uncertainty. If anyone has any additional tips tricks or comments feel free to throw them my way. My pulley will be here next week.

Nah, I wouldn't expect that... lol. Wish it was that simple.

I have read some other posts on here... I was under the interpretation that the pulley being replaced was a harmonic balancer... but from what others have been saying, its not... its just a pulley. Suppose the car is eccentrically balanced.

Yeah, but from the feedback here, some might expect huge gains. I did notice the car being quieter though. Yes, and maybe a bit rev happy but not by much. Is it worth it? yes, I think it does if you add few other things with it in the future. LIghter flywheel, intake, exhaust, etc. Otherwise, it feels like the engine wants more, but it is still limited by other bits so you're not extracting the full potential out of it. PLus a dyno tune will be a must if you want to make the most of it. So if you plan on doing more to the engine in the future, this is worth it, otherwise it will be just some bling under the hood. My 2 cents.

Yea, I have intake and axel back exhaust on my car now. Taking it to get dyno'd tomorrow.

Installed the Perrin crank pulley and I have to say that it definitely improves the feel of fast down-and up-shifts by removing some of that rotational inertia that our cars seem to have too much of.

One con that I have noticed however is that if I go to gun it at idle without a load on the motor (like you would do to show off your exhaust to someone in a parking lot) that the rpms will momentary dip followed by a chattering noise before the rpms recover. This is most likely due to air within the intake manifold stalling because of the sudden onset of WOT. The additional rotating mass of the stock pulley would keep things spinning and therefore making this a non issue. Note, this issue does not seem to be a problem actually driving the car and can be avoided by gradually applying the throttle initially.

FYI, you may not need to purchase a breaker bar if you can slip a 3/4" black pipe (3' in length) on the handle of your ratchet.

Also you don't need a fancy torque wrench for this job a bar-type wrench will work fine; however, you may want to use a 12-pt socket to get the best angle for applying the required force on the handle.
