DRL always on? - Toyota GR86, 86, FR-S and Subaru BRZ Forum & Owners Community

I've found posts about disabling, but what about using them as an alternative to the OEM fog lights? The closest I've found is a thread on another site that was last updated in September with no definitive solution.

My concern is that they are too bright to be legal, but I think it could look really sharp.

Instant $150 fine for having fogs on when there is no fog here in New Zealand. Before making your suggested change I'd check the rules in Texas.

Not the case here... did just stumble across another post asking the same question and the responses all indicated they would be blinding to other drivers.

It's actually not well known here and is one of those technicalities the traffic police get you on when you piss them off and they can't get you for anything else!

I do like the look of the fogs but agree that they can be bright and as the alignment of them is not really tested they can be blinding to other drivers. So, I don't use them unless there is fog.

Yeah, when I say, "not the case here" I really mean, "I see tons of cars with fog lights on at night."

Since I don't have fog lights I was hoping for a unique - and cool looking - alternative.

Get LED DRL's. I was thinking about turning themm off also, but seeing the DRL's made me change my mind!

Well, If you want to do that, I guess if you drive around with the headlight switch in the parking lights only position, you are essentially doing just that.

He has LED DRL's, he has a BRZ. He is asking how to make his LED DRL's stay on all the time.

OP, you just need to change the DRL from their current power source, to a relay that turns on with car startup up (ACC power) and stays on all the time.

(I don't know how feasible is it).

If you check the BRZ wiring diagram - can find the manuals posted on interweb pretty easy. The DRL circuit is a dual circuit. It feeds off a trigger from the main ecu.

Unless you want to go rewiring the relay box you need to find a different trigger signal that is always on since the ECU has the logic hard programmed to turn off the trigger signal whenever the headlight is on. The fog light relay is also a dual circuit fed off the main ecu and its logic.

So using the existing wiring will be silly since the fog light control switch in car will not always turn it on. You will likely have to run a direct trigger switch to the DRL's to turn it on as described above, and this would mean some digging around to find the trigger wire to run to the existing lights. I didn't bother to go any further looking for the exact wire in the existing wiring looms in the DRL's.

Just sounded like too much trouble so I said meh and just drive it more and put the stalk on parking lights mode if I want a cool look.

Thanks for the added info. I wouldn't mind having them connected to the fog light switch, but I don't have fog lights, so no switch. Out of curiosity, when I got home tonight I turned off the headlights and switch to parking lights only, with DRL as I had the parking brake off. They don't *seem* brighter than standard fog lights I see on the road, although I was by myself and couldn't view them outside the car.

Far from the end of the world if it's more complicated than what I had hoped.
