Yeah, depends a lot on what type of traffic you are forced into. That and how you drive it.
I've got 1000~ miles on mine and I get around 26. Its a mixture of highway and city driving.

I was getting 30mpg mixed until the crazy rain started. Now my car's lifetime average is 27mpg. Mixed dense city driving, and highway. Only done ~600 miles though. My E34 525i was getting about 21mpg with similar driving routes and style.

I live in Alaska, so I'm forced to baby it during the winter. I'm willing to bet my mileage will go down in the summer. Currently, I can break traction in 5th gear on the highway going 60, so you can imagine how gentle I have to be on the gas...

My average since I bought the car is 27mpg. But that is full of 22mpg tanks that I zipped through after the break-in, and 30+mpg tanks that I've been getting since the fun-sucking winter tires went on.

Try www.fuelly.com and browse for FRS or BRZ and you will see some actual stats with average etc.
