My last car turned over much quicker, and the other vehicle I would drive had Dodge's "tip start" (turn the key and let go, and it cranks till the engine starts on it's own) so I often out of habit dont hold the key long enough, as this vehicle takes a few more turns to start than the average car (I expect the compression ratio has a huge part in that). What really stinks about that is, it seems to flood out when you do that, and its takes two or three times as long the second try.

I don't own an 86 (yet), but when I went to test drive one it didn't turn over on the first try. I turned the car all the way off, then to "on" for a bit, and then proceeded to turn it over. Worked like a charm.

Yea in cold weather or really in any weather you should leave the key in the on position for a few seconds to prime that fuel pump.

Mine almost always turns over just fine in the cold (coldest I have tested is 30 F). I do sometimes have that rough running feeling just after ignition (similar to knock or piston slap), but it only lasts a few seconds and only in cold weather, so not worried about it. The oil is new and full btw.
Aren't subie boxer motors somewhat known for a bit of piston slap until it heats up? |

I have a tune and it was this way before the tune too. (: After coming out of a Trans Am, I'm used to slap in the cold. Lol

I have experienced this twice now but the second time i check all my settings. I drove from work 43 mile, the engine was completely warm by the end of the trip. It was 6:15 when i got home. Then left for a friends about 7:30,for a 6 mile drive. The temp. gauge was on the C, so it was slightly warm when i left. Then parked about 7:45 on top of snow covered lot. The area is extremely windy do to a lake across the street. Got Back in my car about 10:15. Tried to start it. It wouldn't turn over so i turn the key back and then repeated the process. the car took an abnormal amount of time to fire up. The car was in 1st, i had the A/C dial at a neutral temp, level 2 air, on both feet and dash, radio was on at a low volume, engine temp was completely cold, temp, out side was 34F Sorry for all the detail but i thought i mite help figure out why it does this. Do to the wind the engine mite have been cooled much faster, would that have an effect on start up?

I've had this happen several times. No issues since I have been cautious of priming the fuel pump. Next time it happens I'm putting a multimeter to the battery

OP I had the same issue last week. Very rough start with a noticeable clanking noise for a couple seconds. I shut the car off at home and let it sit tried it again and no issues. It was very cold I think in the high 20s low 30s.

I am having the same issue as well. I plan on going to scion sometime next week and I will discuss it with a writer/manager.
I dont see it being a battery issue. I bet a flash will become available to fix the issue.

Yup. I have to do the same thing to my Civic when it sits overnight in really cold weather. If I prime, then it starts right up. If I don't, the car struggles or won't crank at first...

I drove 25miles to movie theater, two hours later cranked it and it struggled to turn over. Took me three times for it to turn over. It was 53 degrees. I don't have any mods and running 93octane. Only 1500 miles on it.
