Smile Break-in

Page 125 in your owner's Manuel! Do not allow the engine speed to exceed 4000 rpm except in a emergency. Do not drive at one constant engine or vehicle speed for a long time, either fast or slow. Avoid starting suddenly and rapid acceleration, except in an emergency. Avoid Harding braking ,except in an emergency.During the first 1000 miles.

When I took delivery of my 07 Civic Si it had 4 miles on it and I put about an extra 10 miles on it for the test drive before I signed papers. Not to mention, when you test drive a car, has a sales person ever said do not go over 3K RPMS due to break in period? More than likely no, I mean if that was the case warranty would have already been voided when it was test driven.....once you took delivery and something went wrong.

Anyway I have 50K miles on my Si, and so far so good and I did not follow the break in procedure....Which was I think 500 miles, compared to the BRZ 1K miles. I let it open at 250 miles, I mean who can resist that 8K rpm? No oil burning here (knock on wood) compared to others who followed the break in procedure.

So when I take delivery of my BRZ I'll do the same. I'll break in the car itself up to 250 miles and dirve it "normally" after that. Breaking in the car means the tranny, clutch etc...Like everyone has said, the motor its self has already been tested and "beat" on before you even see it.

I build complete race motors for my off road truck. My break in procedure is take it out and run it up to 3000 rpm. Let it cool take it up to 4000 rpm each time allowing decompression to expand the piston rings. Finally taking the motor up to 5500 RPM. This is a motor with a max RPM of 6000.

The Idea here is to get he best possible seat with the piston rings. After this I consider that the motor is well broken in and I drive it normally. The last 10% will happen over time.

Now IF Subaru test each motor from the factory Which they most likely do The rings are already seated 90% there. So the 1000 mile break in period is really for most of the other components.

The real key here is smooth driving. This will lead to the best results. Jerky shifting over heating the trans/rearend and the motor these things are all bad. At 300 Miles I consider my car almost broken in. I have ran mine up to 6000 Rpm multiple times. I have not taken her to 8000 yet But I will once I feel that the motor is get a little looser. For me I can almost tell just by the feel and balance of the motor if it's ready to be stretched that far.

Keep in mind every car is a little different. The factory advice is the safest route to yield positive results unless you are very comfortable with new car breakin.

What's considered a "long time"? 15 minutes? An hour?

This has been an interesting read with some very good comments. IMO it boils down to the owner what decision they make with regard to breaking in, after all they paid for it! I agree that breaking in is not at all just about the engine but think that some people are taking this far too seriously with regard to constant speed and revs etc. Some even state they cannot use the cruise control while breaking in, why not? No road is perfectly flat so even with cruise control on the system will be making adjustments to maintain speed which hence changes load on engine. I myself have my own way of doing things and it works for me, so whatever you feel is best for your car you should do as that is what will make you feel most comfortable in the end!

This is what concerns me. Heard too many stories of people transporting new cars and beating the hell out of them. Not to mention everyone who test drove the car before you (if you didn't have a deposit on it).

It sucks during the break in period because 3000 - 4000 rpm is by far the most boring range for this car. Even a little bit over 4000 rpm is much more satisfying

This has been discussed time and time again. This is not the recommended way to break a new engine in from a CAR. This guy is dealing with race designed crate motors with 0 miles no factory break in.

So let's listen to a guy who races motorcycles, or let's listen to the engineers who actually built your motor....

That just means don't use your Cruise Control. The engine needs to constantly be at different RPM's and under different loads for a optimal break in.

If you decide the car isn't for you then drive it back to the dealership like it deserves to die.
Totally agree with you. Go with what the manual say's. I am an engineer and we may be conservative at times but it's always best just to follow the engineering, i.e the manual.
