Easy to clean is good I guess, but the shiny smooth sort of leather is kinda uncomfortable IMO. Doesn't breathe, gets hot, freezes your ass off on cold days. It'd be nice if it was textured, fake leather is fine. That way it breathes better and you don't slide around as much. I think one Lexus I sat in had leather like this and it was great

I'm sure leather is great...
but for me, there are too many downsides to leather than compared to cloth. With leather, since many people wear jeans nowadays, it ends up tearing the thigh bolsters and seat area over time. My sister's G35 was great, and she's anal about taking care of the seat. Now its all wrinkled up on the passenger side, and i'm sure it'll tear if it isn't taken cared of soon. On top of that, members have already mentioned that it will burn/freeze your butt depending on the weather. Cloth is harder to clean if it gets dirty. I have a drink stain in one of my seats and it is tough to get out. But other than that, it is a rugged piece of equipment. I can sit on it without worry about destroying the material. I don't doubt in many years down the road, it'll show wear and tear as with any material. Typically when it is a leather seat, it would come with electronic seat adjustments. Which i think most of us don't really care for.

That seems a little harsh, but I accept your point. Leather also cracks. You could add that to your list. Or is that what you meant by "break down"? Cloth seats rip in about a week. They stain. They are harder to clean. Nothing's perfect, I guess. |

You have to condition the leather almost weekly but monthly will do to stop them cracking and breaking down... don't park in the sun(yes i know its hard....) |

Weekly sounds a little extreme. But you do have to think about conditioning and, in the case of a convertible, UV protection. Leather is not that bad. Superchica's points are valid. It's a lovely option to have, it adds class and it speaks to the classic sports cars of the, for example, 1960s, and the Gallardos and Ferraris of today. (DISCLAIMER: I'm going for context here, guys. I am not saying that a $20k Scion is like a Gallardo or a Ferrari. Therefore, please don't kill me.) But, for me, in this application, it adds weight that I don't want. |

^ It wouldn't add anywhere NEAR 30kg more with everything else being equal. Maybe 4-5kg throughout the whole car? But nowhere near 30kg. Pick up a bag of fabric and a bag of leather.. they don't weigh much different, it's just the bag of leather doesn't quite cover as much...

So I am 100 % taking leather seats if there is such an option. It does not add that much weight, and anyway I'll make the car lose weight in other more important places, rims for example. When the car gets full track-conversion, then the car will be stripped-off of everything, only have Sparco lightweight bucketseats, covered with Alcantara, so as the stearing-wheel.

Maybe leather doesn't add that much weight. I always thought it did, though.
Maybe we'll get more info on its weight as we learn more about the car. |
