I used this on Android, and it works the same if not better in some ways.

It's a bargain for the money. Works much better with an external GPS. Can be glitchy, but Harry actively updates and improves it. I use a tomtom mount, works great.

Do you have to post process the overlay or is it handled by the phone?

Process overlay on PC. Exports data. You however can watch it with overlay on phone but exporting video to pc is an mp4 and data log file that they have a pc program to do overlay how you desire.

As a simple laptimer with simple video overlay, HLT can't be beat.

However, there are few things you need to know:
1) external gps is needed if you want anything accurate
2) the system can be unreliable. You can come in from a session only to discover that nothing was recorded or you are missing laps/sections
3) the wireless obd2 datalogging can be unreliable - I blame this on wireless transfer
4) the obd2 data refresh rate can be very low, so you data will be choppy
5) the data appears smooth on video overlay because it is interpolated to 20hz. If your obd2 or gps is only getting 1hz, then 19 points of data out of 20 are 'fake'
6) The data analysis on HLT is very limited. It pales in comparison to what you can log and learn on with AiM's Race Studio or other similar programs
7) data export and video overlay options are limited

In the end, I gave up on HLT and moved to AiM's solo DL. I've never looked back since. The datalogging is so much more meaningful and the software allows me to interpret so many different things. I can also make videos like this with trackvision:

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ViTF1ybixY"]Best lap yet at Thunderhill in the Evo X - YouTube[/ame]
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gW0-tj5YGs8"]I get a chance to drive a 2012 GTR - YouTube[/ame]

Obviously the system costs significantly more, but worth it, IMO. As as simple video record and timer, HLT does the job. If you want more than that, it won't do.

Well lets face it most people dont really need true data logging for track days. Its nice to look at but the cost of HLT or Micron type setups are just overkill for FRS owners. How many people on here will or are wheel to wheel racing these cars? <1%

I'm a Android user, so I just downloaded TrackMaster. $5.99.

I'll run it this weekend and see how it does. I pulled down a map for Streets Of Willow yesterday and configured the split markers. I think this time I'm just going to run the TM on the phone and use video from the GoPro's. Then I guess I have to install a program on my laptop to overlay the TM on the video. I'll try to play with that on Sunday.
Help an old man out I need to start doing this!

Datalogging isn't just for wheel to wheel racing. You don't NEED anything when it comes down to track days, if you want to get philosophical. However, if you're looking to improve your laps, learn more about what you are doing right/wrong, good datalogging along with the accompanying software is great and makes the sport even more enjoyable, IMO. Your view may be different.

It's one of the most cost effective ways to quickly improve performance at the track, and unfortunately, often overlooked.

We also offer private driving instruction, but most people don't see the value in hiring us for the day. When you break down the total cost of a single track (gas, entry, tires, brakes, maintenance) day versus the cost of a full day instructor, it suddenly becomes apparent how much value private instruction has. Everyone that hires us sees more improvement in that one day, than going to several track days on their own.

Just just a different point of view. We both agree I am just more against a full data logger setup on a non race car or a car not competing. HPDE and open track days dont count IMO. The phone software plus external GPS and quality ELM BT OBDII will take care of 99% of FRS/BRZ owners needs without the higher cost.

If you have the money to burn your setup is better.

pseudo datalogger? Solo DL can log data off the BRZ/FRS ECU at 50Hz. It doesn't get much better than that. When I was using HLT with Kiwi Wifi obd and emprum ultimate gps, the kiwi system was only getting me 1-2 hz rate that was scattered and then interpolated to make it look smooth. I would call that pseudo datalogging.

:happy0180: It's all relative to what makes the sport more fun/interesting for you. I totally agree that HLT will take care of the majority of owners needs. It just didn't do it for me, so I just wanted to share my experience.

Nope. That's exactly my voew. Being able to go back after the fact and look through the video and being able to reference the telemetry data, you can see which areas you are doing well in and what needs work. Youu can see what gear/spped you can be doing in various corners and see how your line affects your exit speed.

With all that said, I wasn;t getting TrackMaster to work right today. Will look through the collect data and see if there's anything I can salvage.
