Experience here in NZ where we are lucky enough to have TRD available is that the brake upgrade makes a big difference on the track. Went out yesterday on track as a passenger in the Toyota NZ TRD86 with race driver and he's getting 2 seconds a lap than the quickest base 86 around the same track. Both with no engine mods.

I have owned both versions and for daily driving no point in upgrading brakes. TRD ones are more sensitive to a tap on the peddle but stock ones are very good to start with so no need for an upgrade.

Even more important if putting a turbo in to be able to stop!

Having said that one of the tuners her is putting a brake kit equivalent to the TRD brake kit in for half the price.

Also, the brake kit is NZ$10k here = US$8,320. Still a lot more than other brands but less than they were initially.

The tuners here I think are going to a D2 brake kit that they reckon will be as good as the TRD kit (that are in fact Brembo brakes) but for a fraction of the price. If I get some feedback from them I'll let you know how they are.
