Is booking essential, or you reckon I can just rock up and hire on the day?

I do not know but why take the risk of turning up and not having the car you want? I would book just to be sure.

Book in advance and get confirmation, don't just assume you can turn up and drive. Even just calling them a couple of days before you go is better than turning up on the day and praying!

I learnt the hard way at another car rental place at the ring who shall remain nameless. 12hrs round trip drive to find out that the car I had rented was at Spa

Also check the track calendar, you can't just rock up and drive on any day at any time.

According to fastestlaps.com the 86 did it in 9.09 , damp ( although don't know how damp). I don't know if the the lap listed at fastestlaps.com refers to the above youtube clip.

You can't run flying laps at the Ring on the public days. You must pull off at the parking lot which is located midway up the straight.

Bit of a safety thing as it stops people merging into cars travelling 200km/h or more faster then they are.

That restriction is why you'll sometimes see times listed as "Bridge to Gantry"

Either way, 9:09 or even the magazines prediction of 8:50 on a better tyre like a potenza s001, is not amazingly fast. But this car isn't designed to be fast. It's designed to be fun!

You need big horsepower to get really fast times at the ring, it's such an insanely quick track. There are so many long relatively straight sections, sweeping corners, and something you can't tell from driving it on Forza/GranTurismo is that it's really hilly! It climbs about 300m vertical over the length of the track, you need HP to get up a long sloping hill @ 200km/h+! Keep in mind to do an 8min lap you're doing an AVERAGE speed of around 155km/h...
