I want to run with the stock tires but one of them has a chunk missing from the sidewall from a stupid curb. I know it wont pass tech.
It's not that they're GOOD tires. It's just that they're good to learn on because they're fairly predictable and keep the new driver from pushing the limits of the car too far.

I feel it comes down to how well you know the track, your skill level, and how consistently you will be driving this particular car (or tires) at the limit... And of course, how hard you are on the brakes (I tend not to be too hard on them).

If you're a Novice or an Intermediate, I think the stock pads will last at least 1-2 (two-day) HPDE events, and I'm trying to be on the safe side by stating this guesstimate (since I tried this out myself, and the front pads lasted about 3 events for me). If you're a Novice and very hesitant on pushing your car (like when I was when I first started HPDE events 2-3 years ago), then the stock pads may even last you 4-5 events... I wouldn't go in expecting that though.

Try it out, BUT I strongly advise that you bring along a back-up set of front brake pads with you for each event. Even if it means purchasing a back-up set of the same OEM pads, do it... Although it's a wise idea to go with a higher-performance pad in the first place (and as back-up).

Good luck, and play it safe & smart... Always be prepared.

I ran stock pads on the big track at Willow Springs for two days (200 miles on the track). No issues whatsoever. The only reason I swapped to new pads was because I got them for free. Now the OEM's are backups.

I did the same to one of my wheels. It's cheap enough to buy a set of wheels/tires on here. It was actually cheaper to buy a used 200-1000 miles wheel/tire compared to just buying a brand new tire from tirerack.

My gash wasn't that bad but the last thing I want to worry about on the track is a sidewall blow out.

but WSIR is really REALLY easy on brakes on a low hp light car like the FRS/BRZ.

Outside of WSIR, every novice I've coached has managed to start fading their OEM pads by the end of the day. OEM fluid seems to be able to withstand the heat that the OEM pads generate before they fade.

I can't dispute that. Just throwing it out there for info.

I run Stoptech upgraded pads, Pilot sports tires and Motul fluids for brakes trans and rear end.

Brakes are holding up great. I have 5000+ miles and tow track days on this setup. I've been running the Roval. So lots of High speed to 30 mph type of slowing down.

My tires look really good. I used to dirve an evo 8 and the stock tire wore out way faster with just street driving. I'm guessing at this rate the tires should last about 25k with the track days thrown in the mix. These tires a a really good street tire I almost feel guilty running them out there on the course my guess is you could get 40k out of a set if I didn't do the track days.

The Michelin Pilot sports make the Nittos Neo GEN feel like ICE.

It is possible if I had a stickier set of tires my brakes would get a little more hammered as of now I feel Like I'm limited in braking based on the rubber.

I'm planing on a R compound setup and brake upgrade at the same time.

I'm also running StopTechs and am very happy with them. Way more braking then the stock tires can handle. I still need to change out the trans and brake fluids. Will probably do that over xmas break.

Do you want to be fast by virtue of car, or virtue of driver?

Course if you had both...

Had a blast reading everything! To the op: Like what alot of people stated, car is neutral, stock. Even if the back end starts giving, it is easy to catch/correct. My only complain is the throttle sensitivity for MY liking (i had a b16 swapped ef civic but given it has a cable throttle). Also, the clutch is a little high for me (there is a diy for it to be adjusted). Lastly, the shifter feel is very good but IMHO the s2000/mx5 feels a tad better in this department
