Pretty sure the guy at SEMA from Act said they had one made or coming out soon and it would be like 11lbs or something stupid light.

I had a competition clutch lightwieght flywheel and the chatter was so annoying I don't think I would get it again, then again it was my daily at the time and this car is not so who knows

ACT has 2 coming out. Pro-lite is 10.5lbs and the street-lite is 12lbs iirc. someone was running the pro-lite already on here maybe he can chime in. i think you have to use an ACT clutch with it though.

The benefits of a lightened flywheel are:
  • A noticible increase in responsiveness of the engine in lower gears
  • A decrease in rotational mass which allows the engine to rev quicker (only noticable in lower gears)
  • Easier rev matching
The downside of a lightened flywheel are:
  • Everyday drivability in stop and go driving is decreased (the lighter the flywheel the more easy it is to stall from a stop).
  • Possible decrease in straightline performance (The general rule is you want a heavyfly wheel for drag racing and a lighter flywheel for the track). Even though your engine will rev up quicker while in gear, there is less rotational energy being fed to the rear wheels after every upshift because the lightened flywheel stores less energy then a heavy flywheel. You will notice this because chirping your tires in 1-2 or 2-3 upshift becomes a lot harder with a lighter fly wheel.
I had a 7.5 lb flywheel in my Corolla XRS (stock was 21.5 lbs). It was like learning to drive stick again and a true pain in stop and go traffic. Starting from a hill was also brutal. However, it was a lot of fun to drive around on a nice stretch of windy road. Heal toe was alot easier and more natural since even the slightest blip of the throttle sent the RPMs up to where i needed them when I was dropping down 2 or three gears under hard braking.

Damn 7.5 is way too light I'm sure your revs were very responsive

What brand have you got and how much does it weigh? I'm keen to do this mod myself but there doesn't seem to be many on the market that take the stock clutch or are reasonably priced.

The brand is evolution industries and I think the weight is somewhere around 15lbs but I'm not 100% sure. This flywheel is priced around $250-350 I'm guessing but I don't know because I was given this for free for R&D. As far as the clutch goes I believe it should work with factory set up (I will verify this on Monday). This company makes parts for other companies so they are not know very well due to lack of advertising their own brand. They are known for the H2B conversion Patten for Hondas and also Harley parts.

Ah cool, thanks.

My main concern, that I couldn't get Spec or anyone to answer me on, was about where the 'trigger' for the crank sensor is. I know where the sensor is on the block but cannot find any pics/info on where the pickups are, like if they are on the flywheel or if there is a plate that goes behind the flywheel.

Please post up pics of the install if you can!

I bought an ACT clutch/flywheel kit, but have not had it installed yet. A local shop wants to charge me 1k to do it, so I'm shopping around. I don't really have a lift or the patience to do a clutch on jacks.

I read in another thread about someone getting the stock cluck replaced (lots of talk about how they already burned it out) and he claimed they wanted something close to $2k with parts and such.

Word is that these cars have a very easy to replace clutch. Easy to get at, get out, and get back in. Unlike my WRX which apparently requires taking half the car apart. I just paid $1800 for a clutch replacement at only 50k miles (no idea how I burned it out so quickly). I think you're right to keep shopping around. I'd be interested to hear how much other places estimate the labor at.

They told me 4-5 hour job, but they charge an astronomical amount for hourly labor, apparently.
