It's easy to look at the whole thing both ways: All those numerous classes were put in place to actually protect people against the "feature creep" of competitive cars, meaning, people will just keep making their cars faster as they can afford leaving others in the dust unless restricted or categorized. If you are one of those people that wants it to be all about driving skill, then you don't need classes, you just all need to be driving the same EXACT car and each have your own set of expendables like wheels and brakes and such. If you don't need that assurance, then you just accept the fact that you might take your Duster onto a track with a fully blown Z and you're just going to have to read success into how few times you get lapped, or that doing the course in twice-as-long is actually o.k.

It is funny, I am competitive; I think Brent and Jasper have heard me screaming profanities when I see the timing light because I learn that I wasn't driving fast enough compared to some other drivers (and I am intensely aware that Brent was only about 1.5 seconds behind me at the last event - too close for a novice, Why, oh why, have I been coaching him?)

But, and this is a really big but, from when the starter says, "go," to when I trip the finish timer, there is no thought of competition. It is 100% focus on driving a very fun car as fast as possible. It is just plain fun.

Insofar as the Sportscar Car Club of America (SCCA - that is for you Old Pueblo) is concerned, I don't like some the classing rules either, but the SCCA autox events are inexpensive (work/run as opposed paying people to do stuff like NASA) and they are both frequent and local.

I understand the need for classes and classing rules in any kind of race, otherwise anyone with a gutted, high boost, Evo with carbon fiber wheels and racing slicks would single-handedly demolish any hopes my poor car has of sitting a top a leaderboard, regardless of driver. That's why I like what I heard at the last LM open house about doing things other than just raw time for competition. Sure, the fastest time should be rewarded, regardless of class, car, amount of money spent on the car, but its not hard to have a ridiculousness award, or "most cones slain" or something along those lines. I think that kind of dynamic makes it fun and interesting, especially since breaking out the SCCA solo rule book for an open house, unsanctioned autoX event would be ridiculous.

I guess I just get frustrated more with some of the people when dealing with Solo competition, but I realize these people are everywhere in the car world: Anything other than the generally accepted norm is a terrible idea, and people will poo-poo an idea without any other reason other than "its not what everyone else does" or it's not the 'best possible' choice for a given situation. No where have I seen this more evident than in the VW world, where anything other than a completely slammed (coils or bags) VW on at LEAST 18' wheels with the largest APR turbo possible, is going to have a huge group of people saying the car is stupid, ugly, a waste of money, or just a huge fail. You should have seen the hate generated when a guy took his VW rabbit (mk5) and turned it into a lifted, supercharged, off road tired/capable front wheel drive beast.

The whole "do whatever you want, let's see what happens" thought process has always been big with me, and that's why I love what LM is doing as a company and why I make some of the decisions I make regarding things I want to do to my car. This all started when I wanted to put 16" wheels on my FRS. Not because they may be the nth level of performance, but because they are lighter than 17" wheels, much cheaper (for wheels) tires are slightly cheaper, and because its something different that I hadn't seen before. Obviously, if there's some reason why it isn't physically possible, I'd like to know BEFORE dumping money on 16" wheels and tires.

On a related note: Alex, sent you a PM about my exhaust and your pipe bender (a little while back), any chance you've gotten around to looking into it?

And when's the next Open house? :P

I mentioned the bosozoku style exhaust to Alex lol he didn't entertain the idea at all lol

I think it would be a funny thing even if they just slipped over the existing pipes. To think of what all the people on here would say if we made a set and than bolted them to our cars and took pics. One person start it and than everyone else say they are doing the same thing... Knowing the crave to have everything new and popular with this I bet we could start a trend.

Maybe for our cars but its been around for awhile, a lot of 240 guys do this here in the states. It's not common practice due to the legal issues with something that large coming out of the back of the car, so they will run duel 2 1/2" pipes 2 feet from the back at 60* angle. Not as extreme as what they do in Japan but plays it safe here

I've never seen it in the states. I definitely understand why the cops would not be to happy with those sticking off the back of the car.
