GTR or R8?

In a few years it might be tempting to buy a used GTR that is out of warranty and doing the work yourself.

If he is thinking about R8 price (> 150K), why not anything Ferrari or Lambo in that case? To think of status more than performance, Ferrari would be at the higher *status* than Audi R8.

He did think about getting a Ferrari or Lambo, but he wanted something a lot faster. I opted the Bugatti if he has money to spend but he said that car is REALLY out of his price range. Plus it was something he didn't like. Lol

Correct me if I am wrong, I thought R8 was just a badge engineering of Lambo Gallardo. Well, according to GT5, I thought Gallardo is faster than R8.

And any of the Ferrari's in that price range is not faster than R8?

I don't have anything to add on which car is faster/better. But he should probably look at maintenance costs for the R8. I suspect it's probably close to what he is paying now. Plus there is the Audi history of reliability...

I've read ~$7k for new rotors and pads. Not cheap.....

the R8 and the Gallardo share many components (i.e. engines), but aren´t the same car. The R8 is designed & handmade in Germany, the Gallardo designed & handmade in Italy... big difference

The maintenance of the R8 surely isn´t cheap, too. Especially if optioned with the ceramic brakes.

Break pads for the V10 are front ~210€, rear ~300€. Didn´t find prices for the discs. And here in Germany you can bring your own oil to the shop. They have to fill it in without loosing guarantee, as long it´s in the specs.

I'd try to find an R8 with the 4.2 V8 and steel brakes. That would be the most fun around town for the least coin both buy-in and maintenance wise.

I've never been impressed with the GT-R. Yes, the performance numbers are impressive and it has blazing pace, but it's a bit numb and uninvolving. Add to that a Sony Playstation meets Nissan craptastic interior and I wouldn't want to be stuck in the interior for long...or ever. The Audi has a world-class interior that's legit luxury.

Also, the social aspect is worth considering. The R8 will get him hot ladies, the GT-R will only get him overweight Gran Turismo-playing dudes.

You do not void your warranty if you change your own oil or brakes, read the warranty information. An oil change at Nissan runs about $270 and around $100 at a regular performance shop, not $1800. If you do it yourself it's much cheaper.

The 12 month POS at a dealership will cost about $1100.
- Oil change ($36 for oil (Mobil1 0W-40) + $8 filter + $40 labor)
- willall tranny fluid ($700) + 1 hour labor ($90)
- diff fluid ($90 from a local mercedes dealership) + 1 hour labor ($90)

Brake changes are about half that at a Nissan dealership @ around $8k. But you act like dealership rip offs are a new concept. A set of pads is around $500, a set of rotors is around $1000. Do it yourself or take it to a trusted mechanic.

Extreme performance vehicles are expensive to maintain. I thought that was common knowledge.

As far as R8 vs GTR, the only way I would own an R8 is if I already had a GTR and a few other super high end exotics. It's way too overpriced for the performance you get. Sure it's sexy looking, but so is a Porsche 911 and "budget" Lambo/Ferrari's. Audi would be at the bottom of my Must Have Exotics/Supercars list.

Complaining about maintenance cost is kinda funny. Do I want the faster in every category $90,000 car that costs $5000/year to maintain or the prettier $160,000 car that costs $4000/year to maintain. GTR please.

His family owns construction companies, hotels and construction stores (similar to a Lowes or Home Depot). His parents just gives him a credit card and he spends. Lol

I didn't take any shots of how much his maintence would costs, but I can assure you I saw 1.8k for an oil change. Lol He can't do it himself because of special bolts and is pure ignorant on cars (he couldn't even tell that there was a nail in his tire).

You also have to remember. He gets everything OEM, but for some reason... he seems to be very careful about hourly parking for $8 because.. "THATS EXPENSIVE!!"

Imagine a very VERY VERY. Narrow minded person.

That comes with the territory. If he can go from a 70K GTR to a 145K R8, I'm sure he can afford to maintain it.

Tell him screw the R8, go GT3!
