GTR or R8?

So. I have a family member who currently owns a GTR (R35 2010) and wants to trade it in for an R8.

Went to visit him last weekend in SF and being disgustingly rich that he is.. yet frugal with money, he wants another car but only wants to maintain one. Since he doesn't like the idea of.. "if I have too many cars one of them won't get any attention! and that's bad!" He wants a different one.

I'm not into supercars so much since I most likely WILL NEVER have the money for them; do you think it will be a good trade off?

From my little understanding of both cars... GTR=Beautiful handling. R8...???

Should he turn it in?

SO. Is it worth it? Money doesn't matter much, but having a single car does. Take the trade? Or Mod?

Side Facts about the GTR: You're not allowed to do your own oil change or maintenance as it will void your warranty. Oil change costs $1800, and brake change + maintenance is $15k-19k.

EDIT::: He bought a Black Edition 2012 GTR new instead. Lol

WOW I didn't know the R35's maintenance was that expensive. IMO I would stick with the R35, but that's because it's one of my all-time favourite cars. Why does he want to trade it in? If the R35 isn't fast enough he can get it tuned by either Switzer or AMS. Both Switzer AMS tunes R35s ranging from 600HP - 1000HP+. The only advantage the R8 has over the R35 is the sound the V10 makes. If I were him I'd stick to the R35.

ZOMGWTFBBQ!

$1800 oil change??? $15k for brakes??? I call 'dealer ass-raping' on those... Is this guy one of those more-money-than-brains types?

They're just big 6/4 pots. You could probably replace all the rotors and calipers with AP Racing* ones for less money...

R8! It's all about class and looks when it comes to "those kind" of people. The GTR owner is one who a) probably already has an Audi/Merc..etc. b) Has loved Japanese cars forever, or C) Is this...

Yea. That's what I thought too. He told me that the price of the GTR is reasonable but the maintenance costs are ridiculous. Because changing breaks = removing everything involved in breaking. Tire change is 800-1k per tire.

And yes... he is more money than brains... Here's the kicker... he's only 20 y/o. LOL

I tried telling him to get a car he can have fun with.. but he'd much rather worry about his "status."

Is it because of power, maintenance or just because... the car costs more. Lol and has a different status?

Yup.. he is definitely "those kind" except. He is still pretty much careful with his money. Lol.

Brakes are not hard to do, but if they fed him that BS and he's paying that for brakes, too bad for him.

Now how do they explain $1800 for a damn oil change???

Yeah, that's just rediculous!!! It shouldn't be more than $50, tops. If I were him and had money I would get a used R32 GTR. Over here they are 8K-15K depending on condition and mods. A 600HP well-built R32 can fetch 23K.

They have to take off the entire bumper since its carbon fiber. Then I stopped listening because I was toying with my camera for a bit. Lol

I told him about that. And the first thing that came out of his mouth was... "That car is old! I want the R35!!! its 3 numbers higher"

Is your friend looking at the V8 or V10 R8? Any idea what the maintenance would be on the R8?

No idea. He's pretty... uninformed about anything but status cars. Lol.

Oh, to add on for Dimman. He only does OEM. So anything Aftermarket is considered "cheap" to him. Yea... try talking to him in person. It's like talking to a wall.

R35's are notorious for service costs! The 'special transmission fluid' for the DCT is rediculous as well (something like $140 per quart), the offset is that the GTR's initial cost is much much lower than any other supercar. When you get supercar performance you should expect supercar maintenance costs.

That said, if I was young, rich and tasteless I'd take the Audi R8 GT, or upgrade to the 2012 GTR if the R8 and GTR were the only options.

Edit: here is a blog post on the breakdown of maintenance
