i believe that the Evo3 is pretty loud this time around, comparable to the borla both hit over 94db if memory serves.

Direct injection amplifies the charge cooling effect of E85. I've discussed this in other threads... it's not the same as race gas due to this effect.

ahhhh i could see it with e85. That makes more sense. I just find it funny when people claim big power gains on an NA car with basically an exhaust and intake.

What is the effective octane of E85?

Well arghx7 linked a paper showing DI vs. port on some engine, it was like 115-135 RON or so.

However it makes (something like 5%) more power than gasoline naturally, so it's "better" than racing gas in some sense.

pretty sure it makes less power per liter, just that you use more per cycle and its knock resistance allows more timing to generate more power.

Per liter, it has less energy. But it's stoichiometric ratio combined with the charge cooling and inherently high octane make it good for high compression and the amount of energy you can actually get is higher, but at a reduced MPG.

Methanol exaggerates the effect even more.

Well that's disappointing... It was the stuff back when I had an STI in 08. 80mm and quiet at everything other than WOT.

So whats a good 2.5-3.0in cat-back (with 2 tips) exhaust that isn't loud?

*edit* or better yet, where's the thread with the dB figures you saw? That'd be super useful

i didn't see it on a forum, saw in a video trolling on youtube couldn't find it again it. was in japanese however and looked at quite a few exhausts from japan, and the reason it is loud is because its 70mm on a car that is N/A. the bigger the piping the louder it is.

IMHO if you want a quiet exhaust perrin's resonated would fit the bill. 2.5" and a little heavier than stock. T1R's dual probably wont be too loud either

for power you might look at a 3" though. ultimate racing's looks promising. should be loud though. power and quiet dont go together usually

Yeah i think with the OPs goal of catless header and frontpipe and staying N/A its going to be hard to find something really quiet.

Is 3" really going to gain any power on an internally stock engine over a good 2.5" system? In theory it won't, but I'm not sure about the reality.

I personally wouldn't bother with 3" unless it's a turbo car with only a 2L engine.
