First Oil Change - tbrocato.

Hey guys, I changed my oil Friday @ 2531 miles. I will be sending in the sample to Blackstone labs for analysis. I will post the results on this thread.



Couple things I noticed and this has been touched on other threads already:

• adding 2x6's to get onto normal rhino ramps is a must.
• The crush ring is painted on. I ended up putting the plug into a vice and simply running a razor blade around the ring and it popped right off.
• The oil plug was on pretty tight. I used a 14 mm socket with a 3 inch ext. and I was able to break it loose. I tightened back the plug close to how the old one was.
• I let the oil drain for around 45 mins. I used Subaru fully synthetic 0w-20 and Subaru AA130 filter. I recommend letting the oil drain for as long as you can.
• I hand tightened the oil filter as much as I could and barely snugged it up with a filter strap wrench - this seems to work well.
• I put back in 5.625 quarts of oil and it is a touch under the full marker. I rather have it a touch under than over.
• When checking the oil level on this engine I found it being dead cold after a couple hours yields the best results.

Your filter is over-tightened, keep an eye out for leaks.

The proper way to mount an oil filter is to wet the seal with oil, then spin it on until it touches the block. Then with your hand, rotate the filter 1/2 turn. It won't leak and you will be able to remove it at your next oil change with just your hand.

I will keep an eye on it...you should have seen how tight the filter from the factory was on. I ended up slightly crushing it to take it off.

Same here. If there is enough room, I drive a philips screwdriver into the side of an over-tight filter and lever it off. If you use the technique above you'll never need a filter wrench. In fact, now that I have a Fumoto oil valve, I don't need any hand tools to change my oil.

This reminds me that I need to get oil for my next upcoming change.

I may end up installing the Fumoto oil valve...looks a lot better. What kind of oil are you going to use Draco ?

My last change I used Amsoil Signature 0W-20 and I'm pretty happy with it.

Nice. I wouldn't suggest using the Subaru Synthetic oil though. We've seen horrible UOAs on them as well as consumption on WRXs. More than 1 of our clients was using Motul, and wasn't consuming any oil between 3500 mile oil changes. Switched to Subaru Synthetic and started using 1Q/1k miles. Switched back to Motul on his next change and went back to no consumption. Additionally we've had one owner get an amazing reply from blackstone using the OEM filter coupled with Motul, where they said after 3500 miles the oil is almost as good as new!

Let us know if we can help hook you up with Motul or Amsoil fluids, we have been using both in both our track and street subies for 10 years and really love em.

No problemo. I know a lot of folks will say "oh that's because you carry it", however we actually do carry the Subaru stuff for folks who insist on it and we actually carry the Motul and Amsoil BECAUSE we use it ourselves. We will never suggest a product we don't fully believe in and have used on and off the track to our clients.
