I've been told that for tires, additional weight is sometimes a good thing since it may represent additional sidewall reinforcement (possibly heavier load rating) which would help in the case where we're trying to fit a wider tire on a smaller rim and the sidewalls are pinched. That way the sidewalls tend to not roll over as much.

I've had RE-11's and RS-3's. Can't remember driving on star specs before but have ridden in cars with them and they've provided good ultimate grip. Looking forward to the newer version.

We have a set pre-ordered for the WRX so we'll have them by the Texas ProSolo.

I'm running 255/40 star specs on 8" wide wheels. It's a tad pinched, but the car feels great. No roll over issues at the last autocross. At 38psi I was using almost all of the treadblock and nothing over. No stress lines on the sidewall.

38psi? Are you stock. That is much higher than what I found worked on my car also with 17x8 on the same tire.

38psi hot. I was learning a new setup (kw v3s), so I wasn't as focused on tire pressures. Just trying to be consistent and keep the tires from getting too hot.

Gotcha. I'm on V3s as well, consider testing as much as 5psi lower than what you are using if we are talking autox. For autox, I think pressures are almost never discussed cold.

New to FRS and ran into this thread. My experience with Z1's weren't so good as you can see from the pix (from trackdys in Pacific Northwest).

Z1's may be ok for autoX since you don't get them finger burning hot or for too long a time (4 or 5 runs, at 60 seconds per run). Doing a couple of full days of trackdays may be different.

These were not shaved, not that you should have to, in order to void serious chuncking. Problem solved with Nitto NT1's.

Just to clarify, this happened running my 3200# Audi Quattro, and not my FRS.

Curious to see reports on trackday tires FRS drivers using...

We have Z1's on our 190e and they are perfectly fine for a daily driven tire. Hope the Z2's are at least as good as the 1's! Not sure what happened with those tires in the above post, but something isn't right there. Was that at Pacific? No way that car should have done that to those tires! How much camber do you have on all four corners and whats the toe set at front and rear? If I had to guess from the wear, you don't have anywhere near the camber you need on that car. I think there might have also been a pressure issue. This type of wear is not consistent with a proper set up.

I've heard Z1 Star Specs are particularly sensitive to heat cycling and chunking; saw very similar pictures from some of the WRX/STI crowd.

Those tires were on a nose heavy car with extremely limited camber if you look at them, possibly under inflated as well. A slick surface tire won't suffer the patch loss but still are going to wear pretty unevenly.

Most of that wear could have been negated with proper camber settings. The pressure issue could have been over or under. Either way, I wouldn't let this case effect your decision on the Star Spec. I've run them for awhile and I know tons of people that love them.

This is reported on a number of forums, just do a google search. And it wasn't just cars! See post #15 from the AMA Daytona 200 race that caused a number of bikes go down:

http://www.ducati-superbikes.com/ind...95#entry260395

This occured about the same time as my experience with them.
No camber or toe required for motorcycle racing...at least at AMA level!
