New Dunlop Z2 Star Spec

I'm not sure if anyone here has noticed but they are discontinuing the Z1 Star Spec and will release an updated model. I believe it is already released in Japan and Europe.

Coolest thing is that they are making a "Toyota 86" specific model and it has the 86 on the sidewall :)

Very nice. I may have to consider these instead of my usual set of RS3's I get every season.

Ive been trying to contact people to see if I can get a set. No luck :(

Ive been trying to contact people at Dunlop but I get stonewalled each time. I need new tires in January. I'm NOT buying Z1s so if I can't get Z2s, I'm buying another set of Hankooks

Are you trying to import them from Japan? I don't think that's technically legal to use on US roads, but I doubt any police would notice.

I'd be more afraid if I totaled my car and my insurance company denied my claim

Kido1986 11-08-2012 05:59 PM

It would 99% track use. Only street driving is to the track and back.

I was trying to go through Dunlop as straight from a Japanese importer would be extremely expensive Im betting. Poor USD vs JPY, importing fees then their profit. If it could bne done for $700-800, I'd consider but I'm thinking it would be 2x that.

We'll bet getting a set for the WRX as soon as they become available. Based on that I'll think about using them for the BRZ though I suspect good thing.

Interesting...

We really liked the Z1 Starspecs, hopefully the Z2's will outperform the predecessor.

I loved the star specs. They get slippery before they wear out and are about 2lbs heavier than other brands but still good stuff. If they lighten up the z2's im all over it. Otherwise looking at toyo or nitto nt05 .. lightest I can find

Very interesting design. The Z1 tried to look like a street tire. This time I think Dunlop just said "F-it" and made it look like the nearly R-comp that it is.

I wonder if the 86 version will have a different compound or carcass design, or if it'll just be something they stamp on the side of the 215/45-17 size.

Why even get street tires like the Z2 if it's 99% track?

Do you really believe that this new tire represents that large of an upgrade? If so, you're fooling yourself. Why not buy R-Comps and wipe the floor everyone? These cars were designed to fit wheels/tires in the back.

demby123 11-08-2012 10:42 PM

Hopefully they won't forget about the AE86 guys and release a 14 inch size. So many companies moving to 195/60/15 for their summer tires...:mad0259:

I run a street tire class because R Comps are really damn expensive on a per run basis.

I do feel they will be a big enough upgrade from the Z1s and Id really want them to compare to the RS3s.

I hate changing tires at the track so I change them the day before and if I need to go anywhere, the car is completely drivable. Im driving 2.5 hours tomorrow on the RS3s then racing on them this weekend.

ABQautoxer 11-08-2012 11:03 PM

I use my Z1s as my DD tires and did on the last car. They are a 4 season tire where I live.
