I do, but I flashed new sensor IDs yesterday evening and verified that they are in via Techstream. Light went off when already at speed with winter wheels/tires/sensors on.

Swapped my OE tires onto my new rims without the TPMS after i saw that the stock wheels had 1.75 oz of weights to counter the TPMS on the OE rims. If i can live with the sport mode dash lights on, i can certainly live with the TPMS dash light on. It actually acts as a reminder to check my tire pressure regularly, so it's still serving it's intended purpose.

P.S. two of my new rims required no balance weights at all.

Has anyone tried using ebay sensors and not flashing them with techstream? I have another set of wheels and don't feel like flashing sensors every time I swap wheels.

Any experience with putting on used sensors and just driving with them?

You might as well not put the sensors in then since the system will not recognize them and you'll get the TPMS light on your dash.

I'm hoping that the TPMS system in this car can learn new sensors by itself as many vehicles out there do and want to see if anyone has any experience with it.

Is the system in the FR-S/BRZ not setup to learn new sensors and Techstream is required? It seems like a pretty bad design choice to only keep one set of sensors in memory and require a flash when changing sensors considering the car comes with summer tires in areas where temperatures drop below freezing.

It is not self learning. The TPMS sensor ID's have to be programmed into the system and the system can only hold one set of codes at a time.

Yep, I had that confirmed by multiple local dealers. Two of the three dealers I talked to told me I should just leave the TPMS' out of the winter wheels instead of paying them to reset the system every time I swap wheels. The third dealership tried to tell me that they won't reset the system unless they install the wheels on the car, for a full hour ($103 here!) labour.

My snows are installed on the stock wheels, with the sensors in a bag in my living room right now. They'll be going in the new summer wheels when I get them in the spring.

Some tire fitters may take the approach that they will not fit tires to vehicles with TPMS that do not have TPMS in the tires. They may still sell to you, but they may not fit to the vehicle. A policy(liability?) issue, perhaps, but still potentially profit motivated depending on how you look at it. One should probably also consult your insurance company for their view regarding the appropriateness of tires not fitted with TPMS sensors where TPMS is present on the vehicle. Some may not have an issue one way or the other.

One of the discussion points I have heard regarded the idea of disabling a safety system if TPMS sensors were not present in the tires. The system is designed to warn you of low pressure, and to check the tire pressue when warned so that tire pressure can be appropriately maintained. It would seem prudent that regular tire pressure checks are a wise idea regardless, and the world has operated for about 100 years with this requirement. Even a quick visual circle check every time you drive away is a prudent safety precaution. References in the above also suggest that TPMS should not be relied upon in place of regular tire pressure checks. In some cases reported in this forum, false TPMS warnings have also been observed. No harm in that, as a regular check should be a good thing. In the absence of TPMS sensors your TPMS light may be on most of the time. It would appear that the system is not disabled but continuing to warn that regular tire pressure checks are required.

But it is correct, that it depends on the rules of the jurisdiction where the vehicle is sold/registered and maybe even in some cases operated.

An informed decision based on an individual assessment of the pertinent facts is probably the most prudent approach.

I also suspect over time that vehicles will be fitted with programming to allow multiple TPMS code storage, sensors will come down in price and low cost devices for self reprogramming will also become(there are some now) available.

I put my winter tire with aftermarket alloy on my car for almost 3 week no TPMS, no TPMS light comes on my dash!!! Very lucky but i don't know why and how? No TPMS sensor on my winter alloy and my factory wheel is in my cousin's house(miles away) Phone my service manager and they don't even know why In my wife's sienna the TPMS light will comes on right after the winter tire on the car.....weird

Mine hasn't come on either, and my car is parked some distance from the oem tires. Though, I believe the car has to be driven x amount of miles before the light will actually come on. Believe it's 20+.

Has anyone mounted snows to the stock wheels and still have the TPMS light remain on?

I checked with the tire store that mounted them and they said the light would turn off after 15-20 minutes. I drove an hour plus this morning light remains on. Any ideas? Or should I just bring it back to the shop?

Check the tire pressures first, and if they are all at or above what it says on the door frame, take it back to the shop.
