STILLEN / AP Racing

My apologies for not introducing myself properly. I am the Brake Division Manager for STILLEN and have been involved with performance braking for the last 24 years, first with Jackson Racing (anyone remember them?) working on Hondas, Acuras and Miatas. I helped Steve Millen build his STILLEN Brake Division from 1994-2000 working with Brembo, AP Racing and PBR as primary component suppliers. I helped Brembo NA build their High Performance Division both domestically and internationally from 2000-2011 and rejoined STILLEN in May of 2011.

I am here to help. Feel free to contact me anytime at jhodgman@stillen.com

Thank you,

Jim

Thank you,

Jim

As an old Honda guy I do remember Jackson quite well

Glad to see you join. You and Jeff both wrote the same thing. I am going to change the thread title to reflect that these are your kits and not APs.

Thanks!

What makes the Essex kit illegal for street use compared to this Stillen kit?

He technically said "not not legal"

I assumed he meant not as ideal because of the lack of dust boots on the CP8250/8350 calipers. For those that track the car at all, that shouldn't be important as your dust boots are unlikely to last very long anyways. For my other cars I almost always remove the dust boots before I even jack up the car to start the replacement process.

The only brake related items that have DOT approval AFAIK is Brake Fluid and lines. In that sense, all of these kits are completely street legal.

These AP calipers are aluminum piston with dust boots, instead of SS without dust boots.

In terms of bias, I'll let those who like to do the math figure it out, but for those who want to here's the caliper info:

Cp5200 caliper:
pad area 57.4cm3
piston 1/3: 38.1mm
piston 2/4: 41.3mm

CP7040
Pad area 72.5cm3
Piston 1/4: 27mm
Piston 2/5: 31.8mm
Piston 3/6: 38.1mm

Race vs. Street

Quoted from AP Racing's 2011 Catalog

"Road or Race?

It is important to choose the correct type of brake caliper for the intended application. The design requiremnets for a brake caliper to be used on the public highway (Road) and for competition (Racing) use are significantly different. A road caliper often has to go for long periods without servicing or maintenaince therefore corrosion protection and durability are primary considerations.

A brake caliper for competition (race) use must be lightweight yet capable of operating reliably at high temperatures, however it is normally cleaned and serviced very frequently. AP Racing produce calipers optimised for these two very different applications. Although generally derived from our racing calipers, all AP Racing road calipers have a protective finish, wiper (dirt) seals or boot seals to prevent dirt ingress (contamination) and are of heavier construction than calipers intended solely for competition (race) use. We strongly recommend that only purpose designed "Road" calipers are used on vehicles intended for regular use on public highways."

I hope this helps! Note: US law requires a clear disclosure of "For Race Use Only" parts as I am sure you are all aware of and have seen before.

I thought it was "Off road use only"

Jim
Can you comment on the weight savings over stock if any on the items STILLEN offers? I''m actively shopping BBK at the moment.
Thanks in advance
