Hey FT86club,



Does anyone have experience with RC's or has this model?
How hard is it to paint?
Can I add LED's to the headlight's/tail light's?
Where can I buy the battery, charger, radio gear, servo, receiver at?


I've tried searching online and a little new to this. I'm gonna buy the on on eBay since it's a little cheaper there. But I've seen a few options where you can upgrade the suspension, is it worth it?

And any recommendations?

The Toyota 86 has been a highly anticipated sports car since the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show. In 2012 the vehicle was finally released to markets around the world. In Japan it is known as the Toyota 86. We posted our build here: bestwheelbase Tamiya racer. We've done lots of Tamiya stuff over the years. It's a great hobby! To answer your questions:

1) This is a new body but an existing platform. Very fun and easy to run/race/repair/etc.
2) Painting is not hard but it pays to take your time masking things off and focusing on details like shut lines and livery. Scale realism is fun!
3) Yep, there are LED kits for headlights, taillights, even little lights that make it look like your tailpipe is shooting a flame.
4) Your local hobby shop will have radio & electronics. Or an online store like TowerHobbies.com.
5) Just like a full size car... it's best to get it running and see how you like it then worry about modifications to the suspension.
6) Best recommendation: Jump right in and learn as you go. Have fun!

You have to use special paint so it does not chip and will flex. Use pactra spray paint for lexan bodys. You always paint from the inside of the body and the body it self contains an exterior mask so you don't have to worry about overs pray. And you normally back your color with silver, black, or white.

Edit: Some bodies come painted. You can also have someone paint it on RCtec.net -- but it can be VERY expensive.

I wont lie. To do the body well and scale take A LOT of time. It is harder then it looks -- but if you take your time, you should be happy with the result

@SubarooMike nailed it.

Painting the body is really straightforward. The kit will include stickers to mask the parts you don't want to paint (like windows). You simply cover up those areas, spray the inside, let it dry, then peel off everything and go race. You can worry about decals and livery and other stuff later.

Pre-built stuff is an option but, honestly, the beauty of this hobby is customizing your car. Hit this link at TamiyaUSA to see all the great colors they offer!

if you want to do a single color its pretty basic and NP to do. you use a special paint and just go slow doing layers and drying it with a hair dryer so you dont have runs.

getting into designs and multiple colors can be tricky... ive done a couple slash x bodys using special trimming tape and i always got runs in corners here or there. i hear you can use a liquid tape then cut out the design you want but havent tried that method yet. nothing crazy cool but here is a couple pics...

Thanks for the tips, I'll most likely be using a solid color design. It'll be easier and looks better IMO.

Yeah, I was recommended by my friend to use LiPo. And you think the other parts are good to use for my RC?

Or could you recommend me the same parts your using?

And I'll be adding lights, so a 4 channel remote I'll be looking for.

LiPo, Brushless motors, etc. RC-Tech is a great forum, so is Ultimate-RC.com (smaller, more responsive crowd).

I ran electric 1/8th scale buggies back in the day (converted from gas BEFORE there were kits). It started to get a bit expensive for a full-time student. Now the FR-S is destine to be my money pit.

Which LiPo battery & charger should I get?

Looking for a good 4 channel radio, gonna add LED's in the future. And when you buy a radio, does it include the receiver?

lipo's are awesome but they die easily. they take more care to keep running correctly. also if you do get lipo's please BUY A FIRE BATTERY BAG. those things cause tons of house fires a year so be safe with em.
