2forme, these are the guys in California. http://www.soundmanca.com/
I dunno if its in your budget or anything. But from the looks of your other reviews i figure you might be able to afford them. Check em out just in case i know they fabricate them even if youre out of state.

Also I read you're Android comparisons and reviews. Great stuff, I was very close to getting one of those units after reading you're reviews. Thanks for the info! who knows maybe i eventually will, just not my first choice i guess.

Not a huge selling point but i did this on accident the other day and its like DVR for your radio, you can just skip through all the garbage from the commercials. I know you're not a fan of the iOS devices but if they have it for Android i would suggest it for sure. Hell i have a regular radio and find myself logging into this now instead. Between that Spotify, my own collection, and XM i dont think i'll be lacking in Music.

Oh so i found this defunct project which looks like i forgot to post the other day. But if you look up on YouTube iKit by Schoche they had a cool idea. not great, but easier for the average user to set up. It basically replaced the Double DIN section where youre radio is and gave you and AUX port and a USB so u could hook up your iPad, like the really big one, and you would mount the iPad ontop of this area. I mean i'm sure there would need to be some rewiring.

I dunno about the GPS either, but not really needed for me.

Chadstyle how much does it usually run to get one molded? I ask because i found a company in California that does it, apparently their claim to fame is being the first ones to do it, but they charge crazy amounts of cash to do it. I think its like 1200 total to custom mold it to your car, with 600$ deposit to put you on their waiting list.
I was thinking more for the people who have to worry about data limits or don't want to spend money for 3G service in their car. Not to mention FM service area isn't as "spotty" as a 3G service area. Additionally, the wifi version of the mini is already pretty expensive (comparatively). To spend yet another 130$ for the 3G version just for FM radio.....Do they have FM capability built in? My HTC phone does. Wasn't sure if Apple did the same.

That's a really interesting idea, but I think the new mini's come with the lightning connector, so third party adapters will either be really expensive due to licensing, or nonexistent... should Apple decide to use the ban hammer.

I wonder if they have something like this for an android tablet. I'm assuming it would be much easier since a majority of them use micro USB. But that's another topic.

How easy is it to update the music library on these in dash iPads? I'd assume you'd need a laptop of sorts.

Is there a way to get the unit to turn on when you turn the car on (and shut down)?

No they dont have FM Built in. I think some of the old ipods used to. Oh and driving from one end of LA to the other 3G is much better than FM. From what ive seen it doesnt use too much Data. Really the only way to make it work would be with the 4G Version. I currently have unlimited data on my phone cuz i was grandfathered in, but i dont even get close to 2gigs and i have a 3 hour drive every day.

Yeah i'm not sure about lightning connector right now. I thought they had some sort of USB adapter already in place for this. I havent really looked since i passed on this years iPhone.

I'm not sure that they would have made an Android version of that, i do believe the reason they didnt finish this one was because they were afraid of getting sued because people would be ****ing around on their ipad instead of driving. I think same would apply for the Android.

Unfortunately i havent found any good options yet :/ Maybe with more time. I think beatsonic has some decent mounts. But dunno if i want to do that, maybe as a temp solution.

Updating music at least on my end is easy lol. I have iTunes match so i just have to redownload it. But it would be good if there's an option to mount and unmount it from the dash.

The sound man has been making those claims forever..I was the head fabricator at West Coast Customs from 2004-2010..if you watch Street Customs or other programs of that nature you have seen me and my work.

As far as pricing goes, it's not cheap when its one off custom parts. I've done some starting around $750 and have done some two stage motorized installs that have run close to $3500. That's not what I'm talking about making here though. I'd like to produce a clip in/bolt in part and if the quantities are big enough I can have them produced pretty cheaply. When producing anything one off there's much more time involved and I always make sure my fit and finish are better than factory.

Thanks for the replies..like I said if there's enough of you that want this I will make it and keep it affordable.

Chad

Chad, do you have access to the paint used for the stock radio surround/trim pieces? Or do you have to repaint a different color to match?

Thanks!

^ not sure if he does or not, but a guy on the subaru boards made gauge pods for the center cluster on the wrx and sti's and was able to get the OEM match on the dash. He might be able to help if needed. He goes by SMY Clustermaker (smyclustermaker.com).

Not saying to bring the option to him, just posting this in cas Chad doesn't have access to oem panel matching, he might be able to contact this guy and find out where he could.

Yes I can match it. I don't like the factory silver as it scratches really easily but I can match it for the majority of people who don't want to repaint all their interior plastic like I do with my personal vehicles and most of my customer cars.

For a production run of the trim panel needed I would just do the factory silver and if people wanted to custom paint they could have it painted any color they choose.

I think the ultimate would be a gauge pod for the double din with a slot above it with a motorised slider for an ipad.. that way you get a clean track day look when you just want to drive, and a nice shiny ipad when you are stuck in traffic or are shagging on the (very small) back seats and you just want ICE...

Yea, and you can make it automatically open to an app that lets the ladies put their numbers in.
