Also Subaru do not have VTEC ! Honda designed the real VTEC system years ago which does more than just control valve timing which all manufacturers have today usually called VVT or the like. The real VTEC can also switch between two cam lobe profiles @ a given/programmed rev speed allowing a small engine to produce high power @ high revs. The only other manufacturer that I know of to use a similar system is Toyota, they designed theirs around the VTEC system & called it VVTLI. If the 86 engine had VTEC is would scream to around 9,000rpm.
Just a little correction, Nissan had it too...yeeeeeeeeeeears ago: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_VVL_engine

I stand corrected, I didn't know the SR20 had similar tech.

Your garden variety in the Pulsar SSS/Ti and 180sx/200sx/Silvia didn't, overseas Pulsars and various other FWD/4WD SR20's did. It's a popular conversion over here - VE motors into Pulsars, VE heads onto DET bottom ends for the RWD guys. The make good power N/A but massive power boosted and rev to eleventy-billion. For a short time Nissan had the most powerful 1.6L N/A motor in circulation (SR16VE N1.) Pretty old technology. Just a bit of trivia for you

Mmmmmm, I was never a Pulsar kinda guy although I remember an old friend who bought a Vector SSS which he said screamed as well, how hard I can't remember although I do recall him snapping a timing belt which ended it all ! I admire the Toyota product but also fond of some Nissans especially those with the ol' RB engine

U sure? No wonder then it snapped a belt so early on. It was about 1987, I think 1.8 & twin-cam.

for future reference, everything on that car is under warranty unless its been meddled with. as for being mad, i would be more upset. you cant get mad at a car manufacturer for a mishap to a vehicle that just came out. these types of things happen and will continue to happen for as long as cars are made.

that being said im glad everything is being taken care of.

Ok if and when I get my car, I will be waiting at least a year before I do any go fast mods. Just to make sure that my engine won't crap out on me within the first 6 months or so. OP you are very lucky that you didn't do any mods to your car. Toyota probably would have blamed you. I'll prob just drop it a tad bit and put some nice wheels on it. Then maybe after a year I'll probably make it faster.

Anyone here experienced with Subaru engines who can comment on their general reliability with electronics & sensors? It's hard to believe they're struggling with this

Yeah wait until you hit 10,000kms lol.

They did come up and ask me what type of petrol I used after inspecting the car (because l had changed NOTHING)... Up to which point I had been VERY polite. I was a little sharp back, 'the type I'm meant too - this car has been immaculately taken care off!' and they didn't ask any more pointed q's. Ahhhh the down side of being a chick and owning a decent car.

Everything seemed fine when I picked it up last night and drove this morning...

I doubt the use of inferior fuel grades like 91ULP would send sensors & computers packing, I would calmly point the finger @ faulty parts all of which is under warranty. 98 octane fuel like Shell VPower is the fuel I would rec. Wish you well !

So I was really happy with how fast they fixed the issue. Until 5:30pm yesterday... When the shakes came back, traction control went off, engine light on and severe loss of power. Worse than before. I dropped it in again this morning. Fingers crossed it can be fixed in a couple of days instead of weeks.

While I am PISSED, I am a lady with manners so am not going to angry at a service dept who didnt make the car. So long as they try to do the right thing (keep me informed and treat me with respect I won't be going DMX on anyone).

I've said very calmly that if it needs parts and will take more than a couple of days then I'd expect to be compensated with a replacement car in the interim. Which they said it was up to Toyota HQ on case by case basis. I like these guys, they do prepare me for the worse and try their best so points to them.

Doesn't heal the pain, but certainly eases it.
