Aesthetics is a little more than subjective but not totally subjective.
So paint schemes, stickers, and other cosmetic embellishments can be cool, tacky, or anywhere in between. If you are consciously aiming just for looks, then its your ride and you can let your imagination run riot. In Japan, outlandish styles form a unique art subculture. The same applies in certain areas of the US, like the south (e.g. 'donks') or in Cali. In the US, there is also the influence of media on popular tastes to an extent that may not be found elsewhere. But if you believe a change in color or adding a wing is a performance mod, then you're deluded, wasting money better spent on charities, and exposing your poor tastes in a very public way. |

IMO, the definition is non-functional mods that are detrimental to the performance of the car. Nothing racial about it.

Walmart Performance or anything cosmetic from the big W = RICE. This also applies to a lot of stuff I've seen at your big chain auto stores like Advance or Autozone. It's all a matter of personal taste though. Whats good for one may not be good for someone else. Plus some things can be cheap but tastefully done that most wouldn't give it a second thought. All I know is, I better not see spinning hub caps on an FR-S/BRZ!

I would normally agree, but you have to appreciate the fact that it's clean and there are no crooked or ill-mounted parts. Most modifications of that type have unpainted pieces, cut springs with $60 rims and tires the owner can't afford often so they're most likely bald, and exhaust leaks.

I think alot of people have missed this and think it is a racial undertone towards oriental culture... which I don't see to be true at all and as mentioned in previous posts, there are just as many riced out escorts and VWs as there are accords or (oh lord! the other day) a kia rio lol
There really seams to be no direct correlation between riced out vehicles and oriental origin.

When you call something retarded or someone a retard it just means it's stupid, right? Nothing offensive there. The problem is that the meaning is routed in the actual medical term "mental retardation". Using this term is offensive to those with the condition or family memebers who have it.
Just like the people who try to say the "N" word just means stupid person and they have no racist connotation to it when they use it. The term was originally used to talk down about "rice rockets" from the domestic guys and the Asian's who drove them. I am not defending those with crap taste in mods but it is their car, what do I care what they do. |

According to the dictionary it means neither now. The main definition is the derogatory term.

It seems like racism is put into everything. I can't see how RICE is put into that though. You wanna see some racist shit? Look at what some white folks especially in the south say about the President.

Using the term "rice" or "ricer" is completely foreign to me, or at least until I joined this forum.
Now I might use the term "in my head" if I see a ridiculous, cheap or tacky looking Japanese car with mods. I wish I had never heard that term...there is something racist (or at least referencing a specific race in a derogatory manner) that I don't like. I guess the prawn mobile is the Japanese equivalent to the Oscar Meyer weinermobile. Except the prawns are probably healthier than hot dogs.
