I'm in the Lehigh Valley and the wind gusts were pretty substantial. I lost a good-size section of shingles from my roof, and some window panes blew out of their frames in my garage.

Been without power since about 5:30pm

Not looking forward to getting up and going to work with no hot water/power, etc.

On the positive side, my generator is keeping my internet up and computer working nicely :P

So sad to hear about the loss of life, damage to homes and businesses... I always feel sad about animals caught in the damage too I can't imagine what it feels like to have flood damage - a house must be horrible to go back to and businesses flooded will be down for weeks Flood-damaged cars are sad to see too - I hope everyone got their vehicles high and dry with their families too. Good luck everyone out there.

Are you still in New Orleans, or did you decide to fly to Atlanta? Glad your family member is safe That's amazing that you didn't lose power! Based on the news I had the impression that power was out completely in the entire region.

You said it! It's sounding terrible

CNN 5:33 am EDT:
Quote:
Superstorm Sandy weakened overnight as the massive system moved inland, the National Weather Service said in its 5 a.m. ET advisory. Winds dropped to 65 mph, but it was still packing the punch of a tropical storm.

By early Tuesday, nearly 6.5 million customers were without power across 13 states and the District of Columbia, according to the latest CNN estimate.

The storm is dumping heavy snow in the Appalachians, up to 3-4 inches an hour in parts of West Virginia.

At least 13 people are dead in the U.S. from Sandy. Also, one person was killed in Canada. Previously, the storm claimed 67 lives in the Caribbean, including 51 in Haiti.
CNN 10:42 am EDT:
Quote:
"'The level of devastation at the Jersey Shore is unthinkable," says New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

Hundreds of people had been rescued Tuesday morning, and "we'll have to rescue hundreds more," he said after surveying damage left by Sandy.
CNN 11:37 am EDT:
Quote:
Mayor Michael Bloomberg says at least 10 dead in New York City during Hurricane Sandy. New York City schools will be closed on Wednesday, he said. The district serves 1.1 million students in 1,700 schools in New York City.

So I camped at my fire department at 6pm and stayed awake till 6am. In that time we had 25+ calls, 4 fires, 5+ tress through people houses. No flooding but alot of trees and power lines down. I'm talking like 2-4 feet in radius. At 3am 60% the town did not have power. Town across from me who we have mutual aid has 100% no power. Heard two cops their got hit be a tree.

To be quite honest, it really doesn't sit in till you see it first hand. While I'm down here, we went to see some of the damage Katrina did. Even to this day, which is 6/7 years later, there is still quite a lot of damaged areas. Though, what really got me, was seeing this photo last night:

I was there about a month ago.

I'm still in New Orleans. They cancelled both flights and gave me new ones Thursday.

Though, when this happened, it was quite scary. And it was very hot that day too:

^^^^ Yeah the news is full of photos like that. They're currently estimating the damage at $10 billion to $20 billion.

I "participated" in the blackout adventure in '03. That was quite something, too, but for most people it was just a major inconvenience. It was more than a week, though, before the power was back to normal.
