A car cover protects against tree needles and leaves etc flying around, but they're pretty defenseless when whole trees start coming down

I really hope all of you stay safe. Here's a new update from CNN that I just posted in ProTekk's thread. This storm sounds like it means business

Hurricane Sandy is moving quickly toward southern New Jersey and is expected to make landfall early this evening with life-threatening storm surge and hurricane-force winds.

At 5 p.m., Sandy had maximum sustained winds of 90 mph and was moving west-northwest at 28 mph, the National Hurricane Center reports. The storm is centered about 30 miles east-southeast of Cape May, New Jersey, and 40 miles south of Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Tropical-storm-force winds are already being felt from North Carolina to New England.

More than 765,000 power outages have already been reported – most of them in New Jersey and New York.

It's not just the rain and wind that's causing problems. Forecasters expect there could be up to 2 feet of snow tied to this "superstorm." It is already snowing in parts of the Appalachian Mountains. West Virginia has already declared a state of emergency, while North Carolina Gov. Beverly Purdue h as declared a state of emergency for 24 counties in the western part of her state due to snow.

I think most of NYC dodge most of the bullet. It stayed more southerly. NJ and southeast PA though is taking the brunt.

Haven't had power here since 1. The intersection 1 block from me is under at least a foot of water but it's too dark to really tell. I keep seeing flashes from blown transformers along the highway.. A lot of branches coming down. Stay safe all.

That's what I'm hearing too. From CNN:

Sandy made landfall along the coast of southern New Jersey, the National Hurricane Center said Monday evening.

Even though it has sustained winds of 80 mph, Sandy is no longer considered a hurricane. The center said it reclassified the storm because "Sandy has continued to lose tropical characteristics."

More than 2.2 million customers are without power in 11 states and the District of Columbia, according to data from utility companies.

Storm surge heights of 12.4 feet have been reported at Kings Point, New York, and 7.5 feet in Sandy Hook, New Jersey, the hurricane center reported. When high tide occurs, water levels will be higher.

"This is the most catastrophic event that we have faced and been able to plan for in any of our lifetimes," Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy said.
