I'd say keep the Celica. New cars are expensive and it's already looking like insurance is going to skyrocket.

Then you can wait for any special editions, like the STI. Even if it doesn't pique your interest, at least supply will be better next year then you can pick exactly what you want off the lot.

If you are on the fence I say wait for the next model year. During that time you can better reason through this. Or save some cash so the payments isn't as big a deal.

Think about your current situation, go for a test drive, and decide from there. I was in a similar boat as you and after test driving an FR-S, I decided it wasn't worth the $20k or so it would cost after factoring in what I can sell my car for. Part of the reason for this is because I'm currently commuting about 75 miles a day, which would mean rapid depreciation for the FR-S, whereas with my car the big hit in depreciation has already occurred (and its a Hyundai so resale value sucks anyway )

yes this is the sensible approach! if ya gotta use 20k of your own money,in my view ,it's not worth it!..not in this suck f**k economy! i know some people are gonna hate me for this, but once ya get used to the car, and how it drives,it will be, "ahhh so what!" after awhile, and you will probably wish ya had that 20 "large" back! .remember the real reason why we buy cars in the first place, and that is to get us somewhere!..with what
vehicles cost today,ya really have to look at the car as long lasting, practical, and economical transportation!..just sayin'

You're right, in my case, this is exactly my thinking and it did happen to me in the past, and will probably happen again.

But everytime I drive/own a shitty non-sporty car, all I think is to go buy another one.Besides, it makes GOING TO WORK special everytime

It will probably be the only car I'll ever have that I bought new, so be it hehe.

And I love how the car looks and the fact the it's RWD. But overall, how much of an upgrade would it be going from a Celica to a FR-S? I've been debating to get one or not.

Pro's & Con's Vs. Celica

FR-S

Pros:
-New Car
-More power (not much)
-RWD
-Good after market support
-Active forums

Cons:
-Monthly Payments
-Not much faster than a Celica
-No room in the space in the back seats
-Hatchback > Trunk
-Less storage compartments
-First year on the market = Problems
-So far from what I've seen on ft86club, Interior rattles, torque dips,

For pro's and con's that's all I can think of. I'll add more later when I can think of some.

So would you guys keep the Celica or get the FR-S?

Opinons? Let's discuss.

P.S.

I posted this same thread on NewCelica.org, just wanna see your guy's opinion.

My forum voted:

Keep the Celica: 50 votes
Get an FR-S! : 32 votes

3) Determine the ROI of the purchase. What do I gain from getting the new car?
4) Determine the potential losses of the purchase. What do I stand to lose?
5) Look holistically at the difference in cost of ownership, the potential gains, and the potential losses and determine if the purchase would be beneficial or unrewarding as a whole

For instance, in the case of the GTO:

1+2) I would stand to potentially save around $0-$40 a month from my current payments/insurance/gas for the GTO with the FR-S (I wouldn't be paying MORE)
3) I gain a car with a warranty, better handling, better MPG, peace of mind knowing Subaru/Toyota makes a decently reliable car that I won't have to worry about blowing up or breaking down (or will be fixed for free if it does w/ warranty), better handling, more "sporty" feel, better looking (IMO), usable cargo space (with the fold-down rear seats), more updated equipment (stability control, blue-tooth hands-free radio, etc), and something I can be proud of owning (never really felt that way with this car)
4) I lose a lot of power/torque, usable rear seats, ease of repair (parts are everywhere and are CHEAP)
5) In the end, I stood to gain more than I stood to lose, so it made sense for me

I'll be doing that soon. But aren't you gonna be missing the power of the GTO?

You might be better off going with a car that has more storage space or has more power, etc. Hard to answer your question without knowing what you're looking for honestly.
I'll be eventually auto-crossing it if I ever got one, but not as much as some people. And I'm liking the FR-S a lot because it's a Toyota (I'm a Toyota-fanatic ) and it's RWD.

At the least, I will be waiting for the 2014 model. And I'm already talking to a Toyota dealership about it.

I say this because regardless of your thought process or rationality before hand, the minute you drive the car that goes out the window. You WILL want to buy it after the test drive. It's too hard to get into an amazing car like the 86, drive it, and just walk away. Especially if part of you feels the purchase could be potential.

Think at home, safely away from the dealership

That's true, once I test drive it, I will be sold on it.

Honestly, I would consider that an upgrade. And plus the reliability like you said is a huge plus.

FWD < RWD

Power, you can always fix with a turbo.

I gained about 2 sec's 0-60 and i didnt buy the car for that. I love the FR-S, i cant even get into my old celica anymore cause i just hate driving it now, it is now my sisters car lol.

Im not sure the differences between the Celica GT-S and GT or if u have a manual, but the AT transmission is horrid in the celica GT, but i believe it was only about 20hp, so if it handles the same as the GT, there is absolutely no comparison on how the FR-S handles to the Celica's the FR-S is superior in everyway except backseat and storage space lol.
Well, the main differences of a GT and a GT-S is the engine. Then some cosmetics, interior, etc. I think the GT-S was really good for it's time. But then again, your comparing a car's handling/performance that came out in '99 to a car that just came out.

But I still love m Celica, still looks brand new.

The FR-S is brand new. Your Celica is 8 years old. Talking about first year problems while driving around an 8-yr-old car is silly! The first year problems are warrantied; you're on your own if the Celica breaks (not that it should; they're obviously reliable). Toyota Care covers the first 2yr/24,000 miles of maintenance, leaving you with just a couple oil changes, tire rotations and an air filter through the remainder of the 3yr/36,000 miles.

Assuming you have less than 100k mi, you should be able to trade it in for around $7k or sell it privately for a bit more. If it's getting close to 100k, I'd trade it in beforehand to avoid the big value drop when it reaches it. If it's already over 100k mi, you're talking around $6k for the car. Ish. I'm referencing NADA trade-in values here.

Fuel mileage is the same between manual FR-S and manual Celica GT-S. That's a wash.

The FR-S will outperform the Celica, slightly. The Celica has about 250lbs on the FR-S, but the FR-S makes 20hp and 21lb/ft more (referencing Edmunds, I thought the 2ZZ made 190 but they say 180?). The rear-drive layout, low CoG, balance and LSD will ensure that the FR-S can at least out-corner the Celica. 0-60 times are very close. (does your Celica have LSD?)

I guess all I can say is drive the car and see if the FR-S feels that much better to you to justify the car payment. Getting a new car when you have a perfectly good one is an impulsive buy no matter how you slice it. You don't need it, you want it. Find out if it's worth it and report back!
Even though my Celica is over 8 years old, it's never gave me 1 major problem. And I just hot 101k miles awhile back. And I wouldn't sell the Celica, it's staying in the family. And I did a KBB not to long ago, it came around 12k.

And I think Japan/Europe had 190hp while the US had 180hp. And nope, my Celica doesn't have LSD.

And second to last sentence says it all, I don't need but I want it.

And I'll report back with test drive hopefully soon! This Toyota dealership over here are always out of FR-S's.

I know the FR-S isn't a total package. That's what I really like about it. So I can build it up exactly like how I want it. And I love saying "Built, not bought"

And you should tell your friend to get a 6MT GT-S, he'll be missing out if he gets the auto.

I can't wait to make the transition as well. The only RWD vehicle's that I drove is my dad's Tundra and my mom's Previa, which is also supercharged.

My friend had a Mustang, always doing donuts, soooo much fun. And I tried it, not even close to the same feeling. LOL.
