Buying a sports car is almost never a rational purchase and almost always an emotional purchase. You don't buy a sports car for practical reasons -- i.e. room in the back, trunk space, storage, etc. And no matter how much you rationalize... in the end you will make an emotional decision. That's what I told myself: my current car is practically new (low miles), runs fine, is fuel efficient, reliable, roomy, trunk space, etc. etc. Why would I want another car? But when I saw the 86 for first time at the dealership...rationality went out the window. Fortunately, I could afford to be irrational. In the end, I kept the Corolla for all the practical reasons and I went for a BRZ for just one reason... driving excitement.

Take a look at the Ford Focus ST. It may be the more practical choice.

I've always believed that when in doubt, do nothing. I think you should keep what you got.

I would

a) TEST DRIVE the car, since you won't really know if you like it unless you do
b) since you are so concerned about first year problems, wait a year then get it if you liked it on the test drive

In my opinion, test driving the car is a bad decision.

I say this because regardless of your thought process or rationality before hand, the minute you drive the car that goes out the window. You WILL want to buy it after the test drive. It's too hard to get into an amazing car like the 86, drive it, and just walk away. Especially if part of you feels the purchase could be potential.

Think at home, safely away from the dealership

I currently am driving a celica gt and plan on buying a 2014 brZ

If you're debating buying a new car, I don't see why you're haggled on the payments.

If you're worried about the first year model, get the 2014 like me.

How many storage compartments do you need?....

While I agree there is more space in the hatch, the seats fold completely flat

Do you want RWD or not? It's basically as simple as that.

If you can afford it and feel comfortable with it, I would say yes. I came from a 2010 Cobalt SS turbocharged. Bit of downgrade in power and versatility, but upgrade in gas mileage and fun factor And cheaper insurance. Car payments stayed about the same as well as now I'm starting back with a brand NEW car payment. I was halfway done with my previous car payment :\ But the reliability of the car was going downhill, therefore, I got the BRZ. No regrets.

Honestly, given your location I have to say no.

Unless you're going to the track regularly, or have an active autocross club in the area, you are never going to get close enough to the limits of this car to have much fun in it I mean, it is fun having people look at it, and it is fun to drive, but frankly the car comes alive in the twisties. You don't have any twisty roads, so you're going to need a race course or some traffic cones

If you aren't tracking or fun-driving this car, you will not notice the difference between the celica and the FR-S, except for the comparative lack of practicality from the FR-S.

Sorry

True enough. Only way to drive as far as I'm concerned.

I came from a 2004 Celica GT (AT) to the (AT) FR-S. To me there is little comparison between my Celica and the FR-S, The response time from the FR-S transmission is way faster, i was always waiting for the transmission to actually shift down so i could get more power out of the engine to actually pass someone, never rly happened. I gained about 2 sec's 0-60 and i didnt buy the car for that. I love the FR-S, i cant even get into my old celica anymore cause i just hate driving it now, it is now my sisters car lol.

Im not sure the differences between the Celica GT-S and GT or if u have a manual, but the AT transmission is horrid in the celica GT, but i believe it was only about 20hp, so if it handles the same as the GT, there is absolutely no comparison on how the FR-S handles to the Celica's the FR-S is superior in everyway except backseat and storage space lol.
