You're looking at the non wifi version. Those start at 459$ which is rather stupid money for a tablet like that. Better off getting a head unit at that point. |

Drive your car up here and I'll put a microwave in your dash for you and a little freezer underneath to stash the hot pockets.

the nexus 7 continues to be the best option for a car install. The lack of GPS in the mini is a deal breaker as far as nav goes

![]() I think the appeal of the tablet is that most of the aftermarket head units don't have the refined interface and flexibility a tablet can provide. Also, they are far more upgradable than a head unit. |

I don't need GPS (as I still know how to use a map book) and I don't listen to the radio (As all they play is Gangham style CRAP anyway) so I basically would be VERY happy to integrate an iPad into my dash... I'm actually thinking of using my Ipad2 and jailbreaking it once I get a new one and then fitting it permanently...all I want it entertainment and reverse camera ... also I am thinking of getting some form of WIFI OBD2 solution so they Ipad once again works bril with this..
I read all these reviews of why Android or Samsung is the way to go from a dev point of view but simple bottom line for me is Apple JUST WORKS and I still find that the android and samsung interfaces just look "bitty".. almost like windows... great functionality (ish) but simply not the user friendliness and style of apple.. Also when I'm driving I really don't need APPS and I have a house to hang out in with 3 computers so why the hell would I need one in my car?

I've been re shaping dash boards to integrate iPads since they first came out a few years back..they work awesome in cars!! I used to install Drivesoft or even Mac Minis until the iPad came out but no matter how much PC's are streamlined for 12volt, the automotive environment is just plain harsh on computers. Tablets work much better and more reliably.
When I ordered my BR-Z I checked out the dash with an iPad mod in mind..the standard iPad is pretty big for the dash but with some foam shaping and a little trickery I can easily make it work but its not a production solution..too time consuming and many people are hesitant to cut up and re shape their interior. It's also very expensive to have a really talented fabricator massage an iPad into the dash cleanly. I'm admittedly an apple fan and I've been following rumors of the iPad mini for months now. The size is still larger than the factory radio but there's definitely room for a production kit to be made. The problem becomes who wants to do it?? I can easily produce direct swap kits that will have iPad mini integration, it just takes time and money. The latter part seems like the problem...this car is already an extreme niche market car and now I would be making a part for an extremely small percentage of the niche market. I think I would be hard pressed to sell 10 units. The last problem has already surfaced in this thread and I'm going to steer clear of the debate..android vs apple. There are far too many android devices to keep up with and support. Apple has one line of iPad minis so at least its simple to update as the line evolves over the upcoming years. It also has a very high quality finish that is easy to add a custom bezel and mount and make it look like a really high end factory part... If you would be interested in having an iPad mini in your dash (when I say interested I mean willing to shell out $$ to make it happen) then comment below or send me a PM. If there's enough interest I will work out a solution.

2Forme i posted it before, TuneIn Radio. A million times better than FM Radio, itll give you all the stations, better quality (the reception in LA is so damn spotty for radio), channels from ANYWHERE, and i just saw this the other day, you can record stuff if you want to. Not a huge selling point but i did this on accident the other day and its like DVR for your radio, you can just skip through all the garbage from the commercials. I know you're not a fan of the iOS devices but if they have it for Android i would suggest it for sure. Hell i have a regular radio and find myself logging into this now instead. Between that Spotify, my own collection, and XM i dont think i'll be lacking in Music.
Oh so i found this defunct project which looks like i forgot to post the other day. But if you look up on YouTube iKit by Schoche they had a cool idea. not great, but easier for the average user to set up. It basically replaced the Double DIN section where youre radio is and gave you and AUX port and a USB so u could hook up your iPad, like the really big one, and you would mount the iPad ontop of this area. I mean i'm sure there would need to be some rewiring. I dunno about the GPS either, but not really needed for me. Chadstyle how much does it usually run to get one molded? I ask because i found a company in California that does it, apparently their claim to fame is being the first ones to do it, but they charge crazy amounts of cash to do it. I think its like 1200 total to custom mold it to your car, with 600$ deposit to put you on their waiting list. |
