I used to race with the Honda MTF stuff and stopped doing that when the formula changed to the grey bottle with the green label. However, while the newer stuff was too thin to race or track with it was plenty adequate for daily driving.

Occasionally on the 2-3 shift (with the OEM lube and the thinner oil I mixed up on the weekend), I get a slight crunch. It slides into gear fine with no resistance, just a slight noise, and I can feel it in the shifter. This only happens under light throttle "normal" driving at 2500-4000 RPMs. Full throttle high RPM quick shifts are no problem.
This makes me believe that what you're feeling isn't the collar hitting the engagement teeth of the gear but instead the teeth of the shift collar catching on 2nd synchro. This transmission on gears 1-3 have multiple cone synchros so the top cone may be slowing down the bottom cone during the shift and the shift-collar contacts the teeth of the bottom synchro before engaging the teeth of the gear (which is OK).

Because this symptom happens at low RPMS (where the synchros are very effective, overly so) and no at high rpms it leads me to believe your notchiness or "grind" is a feeling or feedback from the multi-cone synchro and not the collar hitting the actual engagement teeth on the gear itself.

Greetings fellow Fit and S2K owner

I plan to use the bottles of new Honda MTF in my wife's Fit. I didn't like stuff at all in my AP1 tranny though. Torco RTF is my current choice for that Aisin gearbox.

rice classic, thanks for that input. It really doesn't feel like a full on grind, or like I'm doing damage...it's just irritating. It didn't occur at all with the MT-90 in there.

Well for the sake of the discussion this guys seems to know what he's talking about, at least a lot more than others around here which go around saying some oils are better than others just because. It is true that if used on an M it must be good, then again all cars are different, with that said if it meets the requirements for the frs/brz and good for the M cars then i'll give it a shot. Ill post back. Thanks for sharing your find, it really matters to some, i live in miami(hot weather) and the second gear feels like crap in the mornings, i wouldn't want to imagine in <50 degree weather.

Try http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/ . The information on that site will allow you to make up your own mind and, I think, be satisfied.

Good luck. :happy0180:

This definitely happens to me on 2-3 shift occasionally. I can tell the difference between this and a full on grind. Running OEM fluid.

Update on the Amsoil. It doesn't seem to have done anything for the cold shifting. Its Just as bad as before, but as soon as the oil is warm its like a switch has been turned on. It shifts beautifully after 5 to 10 min of driving. Its super annoying before that though, and I still feel the need to double clutch into second occasionally. I'll see if I can get ahold of some of this Pentosin or the redline MT90.
Anybody know where to find the Pentosin or redline in the Toronto/ hamilton area? I'll be driving to Toronto for the next couple months for school from down Brantford way. I suppose I could get pentosin from the BMW dealership in Oakville

if the mt-90 worked so good why would you take it out?
the poster who ran amsoil, did you even check viscosity at 40c?

Has anyone ever driven a factory short shift car without notchiness without touching the factory fluid? My 350z, WRX and the FR-S all had very notchy / mechanical feel to it, something that I'm sure some people would think off as grinding. It has to be the way it's intended to be right?

I'm not saying this to say it's stupid to change the fluid, I feel some people think their trannies are broken.

My shift have been real shitty in the morning below freezing temperature, and it's usually been true with my past cars. But it smooths out when it starts to warm up.

When it gets REALLY cold (like around -20c) that's usually when it sucks more, the shift is real stiff and the rev's drop real fast between shift because everything's so cold, make shifting just a pain.

I should report my shifting has gotten a little better. I took it out last night and didn't get as much "crunching" as I normally would. Maybe it just needed to be worked into the tranny.

When it's cold, why not just skip 2nd gear until it warms up? If you're revving to 5 or 6K, it's easy to just skip 2nd.

From Amsoil's site
"Kinematic Viscosity @ 100°C, cSt (ASTM D-445) - 14.8
Kinematic Viscosity @ 40°C, cst (ASTM D-445) - 88.4"
