Online (Forza) racing, in fwd if you start to understeer on the track, you can usually just lift a bit until you scrub off enough speed to regain traction.

As you leave the racing line (or your lane on the street) during understeer, the amount you have to turn to get back increases anyways - so you'll have to increase the amount you turn the wheel at some point. The point being though that you keep turning in the same direction as before. Where-as in oversteer you turn the wheel in the opposite direction.
I wouldn't bring techniques (like that) you pick-up in Forza/GT5 to the real road. The tire model in Forza/GT5 suffers (? might be deliberate) from inadequate tire break-away characteristics. The grip goes away too progressively, and that gives you the ability to correct the understeer the way you describe, in the game. On a real tarmac that might not work if your front tires are already sliding, weight transfer and less gas might not be enough to regain traction. That said, if you're understeering in the snow - absolutely turn the wheel more. The larger pile of snow that bigger steering angle will help create on the side of your front wheels will help you turn

The proper thing to do with understeer is to REDUCE steering angle, get traction, slow down, then increase steering angle to complete the turn.
Shouldn't acceleration be a part of the equation? We are referring to fwd.

If you are understeering already there's no traction to accelerate, and that will just transfer weight to the back if there was.

With my FWD cars I accelerate to stop the snap oversteer Like here: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZoRCT0HvYsA"]Dave screwing up like usual drving the ChumpCar Integra at RRR - YouTube[/ame]
