^ same..i never got into the AE86....only reason why i know anything about the AE86 was because of initial D when i watched in the 90s. I grew up with mainly nissans. My mom drove a 510 in the 70s, my cousin had a R30 Skyline in the philippines which was the car i spend the most time in when i went to see my family there. First car i ever drove was my uncles 280z. First car i owned was a 87 300zx. The last car i owned before my rx7 was a 98 240sx. My sister drove a 96 Maxima. iv probably built over 100 nissans including swapped SR20 S13 and S14s...Z32s, Pulsars, and a few imported GTRs when i was actively working as a tech out of highschool.

Eventually i want to retire into a GT-R

Moral of the story...even growing up i RARELY encountered AE86 owners up until the last 8 years. However Celica and Supra owners/tuners iv encountered since i was little.

Brilliant bit of engineering. The president of the FIA at the time said it was one of the most ingenious things he ever saw. I still believe somebody spilled the beans than the scrutineers actually finding it.

In all honesty I don't know why the Corolla AE86 is so popular. When I was young I always thought of it as a cheap, slow, baby Mk3 Supra. Then I found out it had a solid axle, and added 'old-fashioned' to the list. I paid little attention to it until Initial-D made it over here and the fanbois went crazy...

I guess it's not bad for its age and technical limits, but I was most impressed by the tech All-Trac Celica when I was a kid, then the SW20 MR2 cause they look like pure sex. Ended up with a series of A70 Supras when I grew up, because they are a better match for me. But never got excited with the GT-S Corollas for some reason...
Exactly. The most brilliant thing about the 86 was the engine, and it never got the best version in it's lifetime. Of course the chassis was decent for what it was.... but that's another story

That seems to get passed around word of mouth faster than a fast rally car.
Here's a hint, people in other parts of the world are huge fans of corners rather than just going in a straight line? I dunno, it could be revolutionary thinking

You can say you think it is. But in all honesty Big Horsepower = Big recognition. I would be willing to bet more people know the Supra than the Celica. Either way that doesn't matter. They aren't going to name it Celica.

If the Celica nameplate is so famous and synonymous with Sports Cars why the hell did they pick the AE86 to name this after?? It's a real question since you think they'll go with the Celica nameplate. Why would they go through all this effort to associate this new Car with the AE86 if there going to name it after something completely different??
Maybe because I've lived in more than one part of the world and have friends in enthusiast and racing circles around the globe? Nahhhh, couldn't be that.

Re: big horsepower: the 503E (i.e. the race engine developed alongside the 3S-GTE, and often labeled as such) was a big HP monster before you guys in the states even figured out how to swap a couple vaccum hoses to bump a 2JZ to 400+hp

Last I checked, they haven't named it "Corolla" either, so you might just be letting your emotions get the better of you. Besides, it's already going to be a Scion FR-S in the US isn't it?

Even talking globally, I think the AE86 is a much stronger name.
That's just it. If you read publications in any other language, the first name that came up was "Celica" whether the concept was designated FT-86 or not. I'm telling you that people's perspective on the celica is not what it is in the US, and even though the last celica was onl FF, it was still quite appreciated, even though a GT4 version was sorely missed.

If you go through the thread you will see where I stand on this Issue. I'm not saying "Yeah, call it a Celica", I'm saying it's Toyota sports car car brnd with the most history and recognition worldwide, and if they are going to label it with a used name, it's the best fit and will generate the most recognition. That's all.
