I'm talking about the void in terms of market position. According to you then the MR-S competed with no one because it's the only car in that price range with an MR layout, no? Of course not. It competed with all the other "sporty little fun cars" like the Miata and S2000. And now that the FT-86 is going to compete in that exact same segment too, there's no reason why the FT-86 can't use the naming convention of the MR-S and give itself a fittingly descriptive name.

And of course I wish the MR2/MR-S can make a comeback too, but in the mean time the FT-86 is gonna have to do.

Yes even with the FRS release, there is a big empty void for a 2900-3100lb 300hp+ car from Toyota that needs to be filled. FR or MR doesn't matter, it just needs to be made.

The same goes for Subaru and the return of a proper SVX idea.

You got to cater to the bill payers and money makers or else we'll head over to Corvettes/Modern Muscle cars or if finances permit.. Porsche.

I mean I could buy the Toyobaru, keep it, but I think I'd want something bigger and faster as well without having to spend $40k.

I feel old because I owned a MKII Celica-Supra as my first car.

And even during the supposed "FF girls car" phase the Celica ALL-TRAC/GT 4 cars were doing well in motorsport albeit with a little "creative engineering" and loose interpretations of the rules.

I'm probably older than the majority posters on this board.

Don't see how it changes anything for worldwide, has nothing to do with how old people on here are, and more to do with where the Celica last left off. People's perceptions of a car tend to be with its last iteration. After the ST205 they left its All Trac heritage, and that's why people think of the car as an FF car. Even talking globally, I think the AE86 is a much stronger name.

I see it as somewhat similar to GM neutering the Impala brand. After the 96 Impala SS, the brand is just known as a souless geriatric grocery getter.

wow... Didn't the GT-4 get banned from rally racing because Toyota put some spacer on between the restrictor plate and the intake to negate some of the effect of the restrictor?

Thought the cheat was awesome, so sophisticated. It allowed more air in, could move the restrictor away from the turbo, and the flange would close and conceal up the extra air uptake when dismantled, unless specially dismantled.

Personally, I wouldn't have a problem with it being called Celica worldwide (what do you care, it's going to be a Scion in the US) but I'd prefer it to get a new unique, sensible name. That being said, it's not about whose "heritage" it has, rather, which label can get more people to come into the showroom to check it out. Sorry, Corolla != sports car.

Really, and you're basing this on....? You're worldwide polling of the issue?

You can say you think it is. But in all honesty Big Horsepower = Big recognition. I would be willing to bet more people know the Supra than the Celica. Either way that doesn't matter. They aren't going to name it Celica.

I don't care at all what they name it, a name is a name, it's not going to help me get an extra .1 g's out of it LOL.

But I do think it's funny that so many people actually think it's going to be named Celica. It defies all logic that they would do that.

If the Celica nameplate is so famous and synonymous with Sports Cars why the hell did they pick the AE86 to name this after?? It's a real question since you think they'll go with the Celica nameplate. Why would they go through all this effort to associate this new Car with the AE86 if there going to name it after something completely different??

World-wide. Think of the WRC's worldwide popularity. And Toyota was a force with the Celica in the WRC.

In all honesty I don't know why the Corolla AE86 is so popular. When I was young I always thought of it as a cheap, slow, baby Mk3 Supra. Then I found out it had a solid axle, and added 'old-fashioned' to the list. I paid little attention to it until Initial-D made it over here and the fanbois went crazy...

I guess it's not bad for its age and technical limits, but I was most impressed by the tech All-Trac Celica when I was a kid, then the SW20 MR2 cause they look like pure sex. Ended up with a series of A70 Supras when I grew up, because they are a better match for me. But never got excited with the GT-S Corollas for some reason...

Yes, and think of Drag Racing's popularity. Something everyone does in every country on the streets. WRC is popular, but it's not something anyone can drive up and just do no matter how crappy their car. Plus there's something more magical about a 1,200 horsepower monster lol. That seems to get passed around word of mouth faster than a fast rally car.

Because it's cheap and handles extremely well. What's not to like? Being cheap is probably it's biggest selling point. It might have had old fashioned tech, but it worked well and in the right hands was able to beat newer, "faster" cars.

Also you can't take what you get excited about and say "Ok I liked Celica's so therefore everyone loves Celica's more than anything! WORLDWIDE!". That's just asinine. What you get excited about has literally nothing to do what how a Multinational corporation is going to name their product. It's one thing to say "I would like them to name it Celica." compared to "They are going to name it Celica, because of it's immense popularity.". I would like to see a new Celica. But this is not it.

You didn't like them, but a lot of people do. But it's also about what the car represents, excellent performance in a cheap package. That's what Toyota wants for this new car. They aren't breaking any new ground, but they don't have to reinvent the wheel to make a cheap, fast car. It's also why they didn't draw upon the Celica for inspiration. That's not really what it was about.
