Again you are benchseat racing here. I've ran the Star Specs which are just as big as the RSRs. I was told by people that my 275s would be useless and that it's dangerous well not with the thick strong sidewalls 180-200 rating tires have. Well anyways I beat those people in my useless and dangerous setup, upon inspection of tires after 5k miles and events I've gotten even wear.

Well you prove the point, that my 275 could possibly be 255s(doubt it, more like 270s) and so if the 8" handles it as a "255" then there is no problem with an actual 255 tire possibly being 250-260 actual size on an 8" wheel or 7.5".

My race car is a 3400# iron/steel tank and has drag time, track time and autox time your argument is not helping you persuade me, or the hundreds of others who have the same setup.

The FT86 will be at least 600# lighter and less stress on the tires.

if it works for you then ok. but it sounds as if others have said the same thing. that's not a recommended tire size for that size wheel. and again, my only point was that NT-05's run skinny and so its not that outrageous to run 275 NT-05's on an 8" rim. just because you can doesnt necessarily mean you should. what works for you may not work for others. just sayin...

Ok with that behind us, the original argument was 255. So 255 on an 8" wheel whether RS3, SS, RSR, NT05. I say Yes. On a 7.5" I still say Yes again.

2. It's a show car. You can't judge things like the fender clearance from this to the final production. If it has the suspension the final version has (it doesn't), it's got custom larger wheels and perhaps spacers to get closer to the 'flush' look all the kids like these days.

3. On basically any car, but especially one as small and powerless at the FR-S will likely be, 18-19" rims are too big.

4. There are more than two sizes of wheels, especially when you're including offsets.

5. Track != wheel width.

6. 8" wheels can hold a lot of rubber, you don't need 9" wide wheels hardly ever. If you do really need 9" wheels, you'll be at the point that a little bit of bodywork is going to be a drop in the bucket.

5. But I didnt say track = wheel width, I said Toyota/Subaru should design the fender (meaning fender flare outwards) so that it allows a wider track... not by wheel width but by chassis design, the vehicle max width, which is 99% of the time taken from the most furthest outward points of the Rear Fenders.

And for that IMAGE of the mule car, those wheels are the STi wheels for 2005-2009 Legacy/Liberty, occasionally used by the WRX also, from my understanding they come in 18 x 7s or 18 x 7.5s, with +50mm fix offset.
The photos does show about ~20-25mm (1 inch) under flush. Which is not to far off from the FT-86 II, if not the same....

The FT-86 IIs, tyre size were FR (front) 215/18/40 and the RR (rear) 225/18/40, and the tyres didnt look stretched or sticking out from the rims. Again, they look about ~5mm under flush both Front and Rear fenders.

The FR-S concept, from my understanding IS way off the production shape, multiple articles and people have stated that the FR-S is a "true" concept version of the FT-86... which is ironic.... because it was "shown" last....

My other concerns about the Rear fenders of the FT-86 II, is that the exhaust pipes are placed that not much room is left for the wheel/tyre to extend inwards, as you have to have clearance from the suspension struts....

Again my concerns are that the available AFTERMARKET wheels selection will be affected significantly if they limit the Rear wheels to be 7.5 to 8 inch wide...

I also dont really like to modify sheet metals.... Subaru is KNOWN for HUGE fender inner lips (~20-25mm), which requires Rolling... and I would not roll fenders on a brand new car.... Toyota is more generous, (~3-5mm fender lips (pre-rolled off the stamping process)).
So right NOW... here's hoping Toyota got their inputs for the Fender designing...

then again, Subaru hasnt as much RWD experience as Toyota, surely Toyota knows that RWD cars tend to be modified to have upto ~1 to 2 inches wider than the front wheels.

just got back from melbourne, just thought i'd share my 2 cents.

talked to a toyota rep and he said that it was being released in Aus 2nd half next year so that'll mean earlier for all you guys in europe and america going on normal car release trends, so that's good news right?

there wasnt really any new news to report that we havnt heard/picked out before(brake change), only thing was that the cars front end was damaged in transit from italy to here and the whole front end had to be replaced in two days, nothing looked to different in person.

p.s. jeezz the car looks so much better in person than in pics i wasnt much of a fan of the MkII till i saw it up close and live in person it looked amazing im just waiting on pics n i'll post for those who want to scrutinise to seee any changes on the front of the car(if there is any)

Changes or no changes, always good to see a new set of pictures of this car

What were your impressions on its size. Going by pictures its really difficult to get a handle on it. How for example would it compare to a MK1 Audi TT?

it looks bigger than a Mk1 audi TT aloootttt longer front end(goes without saying) and it looks like there'll be alot more room in the cabin, and i can make this comparison because i drove my uncles TT acouple of times so i know how cramped it can be in the TT

Thanks for your reply Calais, its really helpful.

I was expecting it to come in smaller but am glad it sounds like there will be a little more interior space.

This video is the only one I've seen that offers any size comparison between the FT-86 and other "normal" cars. It's not much of a length comparison, but the prototype passes a small hatchback and a C-class at 1:55 which really allows you to see how low the car is.

My other concerns about the Rear fenders of the FT-86 II, is that the exhaust pipes are placed that not much room is left for the wheel/tyre to extend inwards, as you have to have clearance from the suspension struts....
look at the pic again, there seems to be more than enough space for wider wheels. if you estimate 1 inch to flush, that means you can go 2 inches up in wheel width (assuming strut clearance) and that turns out to be 9" wide. this car will not need 9" wheels... and assuming not enough strut clearance, you can probably go 8.5 with eyeball measurements. and 8.5" itself is pretty damn wide for this car...

all evidence at this time suggests non staggered wheels. the concept probably has staggered wheels for looks only. we cant look too much into that car. instead look over the spy pics with a fine toothed comb.

again, look at the spy pics. the muffler is a single muffler, transversely mounted with dual tips. all of that will most likely be behind the rear wheels. the exhaust has nothing to do with the wheels and suspension.

Which means it'll be easy to take 40lbs off the rear of the car
