It definitely doesn't get cold enough in CA to warrant a more volatile gasoline for cold weather operation, but I pretty much don't know anything about how fuel formulations work. So I might be completely wrong.

But holy shit, I did not notice the gas prices going up. Gonna fill up if I see ~$4.2/gallon since $5 is way crazy.

EDIT: okay read that article, it says they add butane into the fuel for the winter, which I'm guessing has slightly lower energy density or something.
dont sweat it, we pay a lot less for gas than the rest of the world

Yea, but who really thinks about that when they see the gas prices going up? All I remember thinking when I pumped my 4.30/gallon gas was "damn, I barely drove this and that was 47 bucks?"

We also drive more due to our population/cities being more dispersed. Just because our gas is cheaper doesn't mean it hurts us less.

That's not really true. We pay double what you do ($1.50 p litre) and an 86 costs about $40k as well.

The blending sounds annoying esp if you don't need it in CA. In Aus we do have pretty consistent fuels.

CARB will bancrupt this entire state. EVeryone voted for that prop years ago, now we will pay forever. no more GoldenState... time to move.

I was thinking more of Europe than AU; I suppose it's not true everywhere, but Americans have always driven a lot in comparison to many other places.

I don't know that alcohol fuel is the problem, ethanol is pretty cheap to produce. However everything else they've done has screwed over just about everything that has to do with cars...whose idea was it to start this CARB thing? They need to be shot.

i agree, CARB also hinders all other states because manufacturers just build to CARB spec.

Guess if gas prices go down to normal before the winter blend kicks in, I should hurry and fill the tank to get as much summer gas in the tank as possible...

To my knowledge you can't get more than a 10% ethanol at the pump without going to "E85".

I live in Utah. We use E10 year round at most pumps.
