He's probably referring to the very light ticking noise which is not the same as the chirping. Every single BRZ/FR-S engine will 100% have an intermittent ticking due to the direct injection kicking on then back off while in idle. If you don't have this noise... that would be a MAJOR problem.

I have a new pump on order. Tech gave me a copy of the bulletin that says:

"It is a result of the positioning of the plunger stopper inside the high-pressure pump. Some may have a plunger stopper position that when combined with certain fuel temperatures or fuel formulations, may result in aeration of the fuel within the body of the pump causing the sound..."

The whole HP pump assy. needs to be replaced. I'll see if I can get this scanned at work tomorrow.

E10 Drivability Issues:

1. Engine performance problems, often simply due to lower energy of ethanol-blends.
2. Hard starting and operating difficulty.
3. Hesitation and lack of acceleration.
4. Stalling, especially at low speeds.
Aren't these issues we are dealing with?
I wonder if just putting in some gas without ethanol in it will solve all our issues?
Firstly, its a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB), not a recall. The pump chirping doesn't seem to affect the performance of the car. Also, if you had bothered to read back, you would see that the part number doesn't change when they revise the part. Its a car part, not a software patch.

And I think you are being alarmist with the whole "Not being able to run E10" in our cars scenario. Most of the things are you citing there happen when non flex-fuel cars run something like E85 or a formulation higher than E10. I haven't noticed any of these issues you listed above in the month and a half I have been driving my car (currently at ~2250 miles), and I've likely been using E10 the entire time.

No Subaru TSB in Canada yet... guys, call your dealers, they're taking note of every car that has the chirping sound...

I actually did read the first 20 or so pages on this but didn't really want to read another 30 pages, and my car along with many others on this forum are dealing with hard starts and idle issues at low rmps.

Ah, yeah, its a pretty expansive thread. Also, the idle/hard starts have been more attributed to a cam gear issue that is being covered in another thread.

Or did I miss a connection there?

I over heard on the news this morning about how were about to get "winter gas" pretty soon. Anyone know what that is? I hope it doesn't bring in more problems.

^^The change the gasoline formula every season (winter vs. summer) for, if I am not mistaken, EPA and fuel emissions reasons. I am unaware that these changes cause performance problems or variations in cars.

Link: Difference between winter and summer Gas

Looks like there isn't anything that would affect the car's performance, other than MPG.

Scanned bulletin info:

http://www.teknikrayon.net/docs/BRZ_fuelpumpTSB.pdf

The quality is kinda funky, but that's because I was given a photocopy.

Just left my dealership to have the chirp inspected and verified. They said they wouldn't order the part until they verify my chirping was coming from the fuel pump, which I find to be ridiculous that they will not carry this part. Anyway, verified the concern and the part will be here in...2 WEEKS! Ugh!

More importantly...I have the lightweight pulley, Airaid intake, shifter bushing, and headerback exhaust installed and they didn't say a peep about it. I remember somebody asking about that. There's your answer.

The TSB is not very old and I'm sure most dealerships haven't seen more than a couple of these in for anything but their first oil changes at this point.

From a distribution standpoint, it would make sense to keep the pumps at a warehouse and ship when needed, rather than having some quantity on-hand at every single dealership (which may or may not receive any customers with this complaint).
