There isn't one for the BRZ yet, you are correct. But your dealer is still dead wrong. Ticking is normal, chirping is not.

Subaru has issued a TSB, not sure why they make it so difficult to access though. It shows up in this list: http://techinfo.subaru.com/static/whatsNew.html

Anyone have access to the PDF? I'd be interested in comparing it to the Scion TSB

Perfect timing.

Hi T,

I brought my BRZ in for an idle 'chirping' in the engine that occurred after the car was warmed up. Your technicians reproduced the behavior and informed me that the sound was normal. It's a very obnoxious sound and 'normal' or not, it's unacceptable and is something that needs to be resolved. Scion just released this TSB for their FR-S (essentially the same car as the BRZ) formally addressing the problem as anything but normal and I expect Subaru will do the same.

TSB is attached.

Thanks,
Matt

Good morning Matt,

Thank you for the TSB. I’m not sure if the hi pressure fuel pump system is the same parts on the Subaru as the Scion. I am forwarding the TSB to our shop foreman so he can research it and let me know if need to get you back in, or what our next step is.

Thanks!
T

-------------------------------------------------

Hi Matt,

I have forwarded your email to our regional rep. Subaru will not allow us to follow a Scion TSB. They may be the same parts etc., but Subaru does not acknowledge Sion’s TSB’s, just like Scion would not acknowledge Subaru’s TSB’s. If Subaru is showing it to be normal operation, we are not allowed to perform a repair unless they deem it to be abnormal. I have submitted the information to our Rep and filed it with Subaru. We will just need to wait and see what Subaru comes up with regarding the issue. You can also call customer care as well to voice your concern regarding the noise and that Subaru does not have a fix for it. Their phone number is (800)782-2783.

Thank you,
T

Thanks T. I understand the situation and appreciate the acknowledgement. As I said, I expect Subaru will release a TSB sometime in the near future and eagerly await it.

Good morning Matt,

Guess what Subaru came out with this morning… a TSB on this issue. I have written a repair order for you so we could order in parts. I will let you know when they come in. Keep in mind, there will still be some noise when it transfers over to direct injection. This is normal and will not be repaired. Have a great week, I will call you when we get parts.

Thanks!
T

I dropped mine off at Kearny Mesa this morning. They apparently are well aware of the TSB. The tech walked up and asked, "Is this for the fuel pump?" Hopefully that means it'll be fixed.

Called my dealer this morning and mentioned the TSB number. I picked the car up yesterday afternoon and they had supposedly checked early that morning and found nothing. Waiting to hear back on what they're doing.

I actually had planned to go there (I live in Oceanside), but since I work in Poway, I could get the Kearny Mesa shuttle to take me to work (Poway). Otherwise, I'd have to take a day off of work for this crap.

We need more Subie dealerships in the San Diego area!

Ok just got the chirp today 500miles. Car is about a month old. If its the same part number on the tsb then what's the point in the recall? Also what if our cars are not meant to run e10 in our USA fuel?
E10 Drivability Issues:

1. Engine performance problems, often simply due to lower energy of ethanol-blends.
2. Hard starting and operating difficulty.
3. Hesitation and lack of acceleration.
4. Stalling, especially at low speeds.
Aren't these issues we are dealing with?
I wonder if just putting in some gas without ethanol in it will solve all our issues?
