I haven't ever seen a camera like this but from the looks of it I would guess this is made to mount in a similar manner to parking sensors. The white part is the same type of holder used on a lot of parking sensors and the angle of the camera looks relatively flat, like it would sit flush with your bumper and basically aim straight out.

Big hole required. Won't for in OEM location. Swivel equals more to break and water penetration.

This is basically whats involved:
  • Remove the trunk lid liner (pop out a bunch of push tabs with a flathead screwdriver).
  • Unbolt the trunk fascia that houses the license plate lights/trunk lock/trunk release (5 8mm bolts and a plastic tab).
  • Remove (or just loosen the top part of) the interior panel on the driver side of the trunk and rear seat (more push tabs that you undo with a flathead).
  • Optional - remove the door sill runner, or just leave it since the wiring isn't that thick you can coax it through the side easily enough.
  • Unfasten the wiring sleeve that allows wires to route from the trunk lid to the car body inside the trunk.
  • Mount your camera (varies depending on model).
  • Wiring starts from the trunk lid, fish it through the sleeve, into the trunk, along the paneling that you have exposed, under the door sill runner, to the fuse box on the driver's kickpanel for power (use an add-a-circuit to tap into power).
  • If you haven't already done so, remove the headunit by pulling the plastic trim around the headunit out using a plastic pull tool or a flathead screwdriver covered with soft material so as not to scratch anything. Once the trim is pulled out (it just snaps out), use a socket wrench to remove the four bolts holding the headunit in place - I believe it's a 10mm. Now you can pull the headunit out and unharness the 16-pin connector.
  • Connect your camera's video input to the 16-pin connector (pins 8 and 16).
  • Put everything back the way you found them.
  • Calibrate your camera's viewing angle if necessary, and adjust the headunit's distance line markers per your preference.
  • Enjoy!

Edit: This isn't the only or best way to do it - this is simply a basic overview of what you would need to do. This is how I did it, and I'm happy with the results.

which fuse did you tap into? Also wouldnt you want it only to turn on when your going in reverse? or is it required to be on all the time?

Just pick one that's on ACC so it isn't on *all* the time. Yeah, it's still on while the car is on, but that's better than 24x7. I personally tapped into one of the seat warmers.

Ideally, it would be powered by the camera power lead off of the 16-pin harness of the head unit. The problem, as I understand it, is that the OEM camera is a 6 volt unit instead of a 12 volt, so unless you can step that up, or your aftermarket camera can take 6 volts, you have to go with your own circuit.

You might think you could get by with tapping into the reverse light, since that's only on during a reverse gear switch. This is true, but the additional problem you'll run into is that the head unit checks for video input at startup and if it doesn't find it, it assumes you have no camera. Unless you happen to be in reverse when you start it up, this won't work.

The camera power lead on the 16-pin harness is = to ACC (on when the car is on).

I grabbed power from the factory amp in the trunk which was very convenient.

Oh? So the head unit was designed to always have the camera on? Interesting that they wouldn't have made it switched with the reverse sensor, since they have all that coming to the head unit anyway. I know cameras have long lifecycles, but I figured it would've been better to only power it when needed.

The reverse 16-pin plugs are in, and I now have the plug-and-play camera harnesses available! These are great for those who are hesitant about modifying the factory harness, or who want the ability to quickly disconnect and go back to the stock configuration. The basic RCA cable with pins is still available also. Link.

Several Subaru BRZ owners have tested my cables and harnesses and have been very happy.

Quote:
If you own a different Subaru or Toyota/Scion model (with an OEM HU with the same 16-pin socket for the rear camera input), I'll provide a harness at a reduced price to each person who can post pictures of each factory head unit model I haven't seen yet.

Pictures need to be the complete set of ones requested in this thread, plus these additional shots:
  • Factory 16-pin harness, looking straight down at the top -- clearly showing all wires. Also one more looking at the back. All with no hands in the picture. If there are more than two wires, I may ask for a couple more shots.
  • Factory 28-pin harness, looking straight at the top and straight at the bottom, with a strip of white paper or thin cardboard inserted between the two rows of wires -- so each picture only shows the single row nearest to the camera (pins 1-14 in one shot, and pins 15-28 in the second). Again, with no hands in the frame.
An FR-S owner has already promised to send pictures of his BeSpoke HU and harnesses.

People that I've already sent a harness to are still eligible -- I'll refund a portion of your purchase.

I reserve the right to limit or end this offer (especially if there are a bunch of HUs that look nearly identical except have a different model number). If in doubt, PM me first.

The car must be one you own, and the pictures ones you take yourself (not lifted from another post).

The hole required is actually not that big. I'll post some pictures up tommorrow. The only problem is the angle isnt right (and being a nooob, i drilled the hole before actually testing it out -_- (i figured it 360 swivel meant 360 swivel...i was wrong).

One issue I'm having with the boyo is I went ahead and cut the blue wire and the guide lines are still there. You purchased a boyo right?

Can't wait to see how it looks on yours... Keep us updated!

I'm very tempted to get one...but I might hold that urge and wait for an OEM one...
BUT...If I were to get this, I would probably mask and paint it white to match the SWP instead of leaving it black if it's offset to the side...
(Limited has the trunk release button in the centre)

What do you guys think?

Looks like that camera was designed to be mounted on a vertical surface instead of a horizontal one. As for the guide lines, not sure as my Boyo ultra slim didn't come with guidelines. Only option I had on it was image reverse.

Snake it through the black rubber sleeve, not outside of it.

Does this mean there is still no option for a rear view camera for the frs???

Has anyone made this into a full time rear view camera without any guide lines? That would greatly interest me.
