As has been pointed out, the aftermarket wheels probably contributed to the lower number, along with the fact that this was a short drive for a car review. The lowest MPG I have seen on a tank was 28.5 mpg, and I got over 32 mpg just this past weekend.

Although I respect Joseph's opinion, I think his review on the performance of the FR-S is flawed for a couple of reasons:

1) The car is modified with non-OEM parts. Toyota/Subaru will not guarantee the performance of this car to spec with anything outside of what they put on it, which is standard.

2) In relation to #1, it is the duty of an automotive blogger/reviewer to do test drives of original, OEM vehicles, not ones that have been modified by the dealer to increase the price of sale. Were I in Joseph's shoes, I would have delayed my review until I could get an unmodified, OEM car, at least from a performance standpoint.

To end on a positive note, at least the bias of a muscle-car owner does not appear to have influenced this interview. Other than the wheels and mpg notes, its a fair review.

draggin_az - I agreed the car lived up to it's advertisement. And the segment the car was designed for is correct also but it's not a practical car.

My 2002 and 2011 Camaro SS is not practical either. Sports cars are not designed to be practical, in general.

A Honda accord and the like... that is practical.

I haven't read your blog but based on the comments an quotes you reviewed a different car. Put 20s on this car and it truly is a vastly different car.

That combined with the fact that you just referred to a Camaro as a sports car instead of what it is (muscle car) pretty much destroys your credibility.

(PS: I just reviewed you with 20s on...see what it's like?)

Does that mean when your brakes breaks, you stop mechanic-ing?

I will also cite the, wtf, test drive on 20s?!

Actually, the Camaro has always been considered a "Pony car". I don't know about the "credibility" part, that seems a bit dramatic.

"Sports"cars, "performance" car, "muscle" car = semantics.

Big heavy blingin' wheels slow the car, keep it from turning, kill mileage, and interfere with the ride. There's no comparison between the car driven and a stock FR-S. No wonder that car is still on the lot. Just another invalid test like the R&T 18" test ruined by poor wheel/tire choice. All we've learned is how the car behaves when you attach 4 anchors to the corners.

I would have delayed your blog until you could get an unmolested one, or demand the dealership bolt the stock wheels back on for your test.

Low initial torque + added weight at the wheels = "semi-launching" just to get the car going.

When I bought my Camaro, the dealer had these nasty 22's on it and I told them I would never buy this car unless they took them off and replaced them with stock wheels and came down at least $3000

Unfortunately it seems many dealers cater to the McDonald's crowd...
