Here's what doesn't make sense about ethanol being the problem: there's a large number of frs/brz owners running e85 with one of the available ecutek tunes, and they aren't complaining about the chirp.

I'm just sayin, one would expect that a) the chirping would be worse and b) they'd be mentioning the chirp in their e85 tune threads where they discuss issues....

The HPFP in those cars will be running differently to supply the much higher fuel flow and it is much higher. That might be keeping the component that chirps, when hot, cool enough not to chirp?
It might also be running at higher pressure which could have an affect too?

That's just a couple of scenarios off the top of my head.

What did they replace? Anybody else try bringing it into the dealership for this issue and came out successfully?

I tried talking to mine and they said they'll look into it. They tell me that Scion technicians have been looking into this issue and the sound is actually normal for this kind of engine design.... I wasn't sure how to argue.

Tell them to fire-up a brand new FR-S and see if the sound is there. It won't be.

Just called local Subie dealer to mention the insects infesting my motor.. Explanation was "normal" and "DI is noisier than other systems." Sound like there aren't enough of us complaining yet to make them take proactive changes.

Another data point for ethanol gas causing/contributing to the crickets. For my last fill up I tracked down a station selling ethanol free gas, and I have heard very little since. About 2000 miles on the clock, and it has been chirping since I first got the car. Down to 1/2 tank of ethanol free (running on fumes when I filled up), so it has been about a week. Gas brands I've used previously: Shell, 7-11, Mobil, Exxon, and BP...all were about the same.

Personally, it doesn't really bother me, but I thought I would give the pure gas a shot and see if that really made a difference.

Not to scare you but I noticed the same thing right before my CEL came on. I had noticed it before but this time it was obnoxiously loud.

I'll keep my fingers crossed. I can ignore some chirping for now, but I'd rather not have drivability issues.

Have you had your first oil change? I had the cricket sound from 300 - 1100 miles. Took it in to KM Scion/Toyota for the first oil change @ 1150 and have not heard it since. I'm using Chevron 91. Subaru is just right down the street. Try it and see.

Scion of America Said they would reimburse me for 150.00 by faxing in receipts from the parts dept. Guess I'll get some mud flaps and a trunk liner
