samfrs, FR-S, 42 miles, 7076XX, 3 weeks, in shop, NJ, a sh*t load of parts replaced on the first attempt to fix the CEL issue, now replacing ECU and expecting to be ready for pick up later today.

Spoke to my service guy again today. Car still being repaired. Tech worked some Friday, Saturday and now today. Nothing so far gives me confidence that the tech won't screw something up since it is his first time despite 20 years experience, none of which is on Subaru's.
No telling when it will be officially fixed, but maybe any day now. My feeling about the car can never be the same since I know it was already torn apart while still a baby.Chris |

Just called my dealer for an update. they will need to keep it overnight to further look at it, but they are leaning towards the cam gear. I mentioned to the adviser the last couple of re flashes that hae been happening according to the forum this past week and my service adviser said he will look into it and update me tomorrow.

Soooooo..... After 24 days I have my car back. Here's my "fix"

My FR-S received the same ECU P/N as you, but it also got a new oil control valve and cam sprocket assy. This leads me to believe damage may still be occuring to other hardware on a case by case basis due to a) faulty original ECU code AND/OR b) quality issues with sprocket/valve manufacturing.
The new ECU could be compensating for the poorer manufacturing tolerances with optimized code; something the old code was likely not capable of performing. Therefore, new vehicles may now get away with just a reflash as well as existing vehicles recording a fault code showing no hardware damage. This is all just a theory, but we'll see how this plays out over the next few weeks. |

Great to hear some good news from some of you guys! For me, scion keeps telling me they are waiting for a part maybe ECU? But they have no estimated date for when it will arrive. So noone is working on my car, and it is just sitting in the dealership awaiting "the part". And the Scion rep beats around the bush about what is going on. She said that there are engineers currently working on a permanent fix and then once they get a permanent fix they will create the part and manufacture it. Does it make any sense? Im driving a Camry Rental car that is all scratched up. Is that acceptable? |

Just finished second pass at repairs, sensors and ECU this time
I think I was number 7 in your combined list.
That first time, they replaced cam gear sensor or cam gear (was hard to get good detail) on one head. Problem returned around 1700 miles. They replaced the same bits on the other head, then were able to reproduce the problem again. Finally replaced my ECU after getting the wrong part air freighted from Japan. Apparently the ECU for manual and for automatic are not interchangeable. About three days the first time, and just shy of three weeks this time. I sacrificed some rubber to the Gods of Hooning on the way home to try to appease them. This car is stupid easy to have fun with on cloverleaf onramps. ![]() I suppose it's possible that a bad batch of cam gear sensors can send an unrecognized signal to the ECU. Could that cause permanent damage to an ECU over time? Is the software fix from the school of We'll Just Ignore That Odd Sensor And Mask Those Alerts?
