Chances are we'll never see a PDK style transmission in a Toyota, unless it's Supra or Lexus level....I can't imagine they putting it the FR-S. Watch I say that and after MMC they release a SST style transmission for special FR-S XD

Ford has a dual clutch auto in the Fiesta and its a cheap car, so its not out of the question...
also, there is nothing preventing a traditional auto from working well on a small engine, except money and mpgs. the cost of a high performance auto is a lot and high performance autos drain mpgs. not really an issue on an AMG Mercedes getting 12mpg... but certainly an issue on something trying to be economical. |

From the outside, listening to americans talk about manual/auto transmissions is pretty funny.
It seems like people like to exclaim that they can drive a manual car like it is a hard thing to do, when im pretty sure that most of the other continents on this planet have majority MT drivers in their countries and dont think anything about it. But, if the UK toyota version comes with an automatic, dual clutch, I'll test drive both - I recently drove the VW Polo GTI (1.4 litre supercharged and turbo'd, 180BHP engine with 7 speed DSG + paddles) and that was a really cool little motor, paddles for when you want to pick the right gear for a corner, auto for when you just want to be lazy and go to work in morning-zombie mode. I don't think id miss anything from a manual trans like in my current car, clutch progression is overrated to me at the moment, because i dont go around drifting everywhere and id rather use a bike on a track day wow WOT TL;DR: Manual if its not a dual clutch auto

I drive a automatic, 2.0 liter 4 cylinder with 140 lb ft of torque and it feels kind of adequate with just me in the car by myself. Going up hills, passing,or driving with other people in the car sucks terribly so I dont expect much from the fr-s automatic but I still want one.

Probably the same reason they don't bring over the Golf GTD, VW probably feels there isn't enough of an interest to bring it over to the US as they probably can't make enough money with a limited production run + costs involved with getting it here for sale (emissions).

Im still on the fence....
If its a torque convertor based automatic then i'll deffo go manual. But... if its a hydraulic dual clutch setup with paddles, doesnt reduce fuel economy or performance and it costs the same as the manual... I'd probably go for the auto instead. |
